    GG AT Tyres -Noise

    I have had GG ATs (not AT2) 255/60R18 fitted to my RRS for about 30,000km and they are showing minimal wear but recently have started to howl like a banshee at 80 - 100kph on smooth or wet surfaces.

    When on the concrete highways in NSW you cannot hear them at all and when on other coarse surfaces there is not much noise at all. However on smooth surfaces it is a different matter and makes the car very uncomfortable to drive.

    At first I thought it may have been a wheel bearing but my thoughts are that if it was a bearing the noise would remain when the road surface changes.

    Any one else having issues, noise wise with their GG ATs. Other wise I have found them to be a great AT.

    I got rid of mine, long before they were dead, for that reason Gary - obnoxious noises in that speed range, particularly horrid at 90 on certain surfaces which happens to be a speed/surface I drive on very often ... also their too soft sidewalls were upsetting my road handling and annoying me as was the squirmy tread once they got a bit worn.

    That said, the obnoxious noises from mine were such that they masked / confused the noises of a failing wheel bearing so perhaps don't rule that out totally.

    I have actually not rotated them at this stage as all tyres are wearing equally with no inner or outer wear in any position. When the tyres do hum you can feel it in the steering wheel but with hand off the wheel there is no shake or obvious vibration so the front wheels are balanced well. So maybe the front wheels are the main culprit.

    So maybe a tyre rotation may be of benefit.

    The only possible aspect is when the tyres were new and covered less than 500km I got a big piece of metal through the tread on one of the tyres - was repaired correctly but I am wondering that as the tyres wear maybe the bit of plug that is exposed to the road through the tread is causing the hum as it may have a different wear rate to the rubber in the tread - though I would have thought the plug rubber would be softer than the tread and would always be worn down to the tread.
