Thread: Under what conditions does a D4 self lock?

When I go on long camping trips it is as part of a convoy, so I always take a spare set of keys and keep them in another vehicle just in case, I lose the first set, or they stop working. I'm very absent-minded and the former happens more often than it should.

A couple of general points about keys, camping and D4s that I know you guys are well aware of ( you taught me!) but I put it out there for any new lurkers:

    1. The advantage of using the rear tailgate popper to access your car at a campsite is that it just pops the tailgate; it does not start up the computers, open out the rearview mirrors etc as does unlocking the vehicle which uses much more battery power because all these behind the scenes things happen.

    2. Do not leave your key fob in the car "safe & sound" when at a campsite or visiting friends in the country as you feel city/urban security concerns are no longer valid. Even though you increase the risk of misplacing your key away from the vehicle because you are not in your usual environment where you have a regular place yuo keep them, take them out of the car and lock it, as this is the best way to get to and maintain full "power down" mode. This minimises power usage.

If you need to go to the car to get another bottle of wine/boutique beer /pimms & lemonade/milk for the latte out of the Engel, and let's face it if you are camping properly, you will need to make these trips, then follow these two rules to save power. Do not think because you have one of those wonderful dual battery systems and you are only parked up for two nights and one day that yuo have all the 12v power in the world to waste. You don't.

One CAN lock the car with a fob in the car
Off to the South Coast for a few days, thought I would try and lock the fob in to see if I can leave the spare fob in a travel bag.

Yep - you can definitely lock a key fob in the car using another key fob. When we went to Tassie, SWMBO had the spare key fob with her "just in case". More often than not, she left it in the glovebox, and I continued to lock / unlock the car as normal with my own key fob. (Not really sure what she thought the advantage was of carrying the spare key with us when it spent most of its time locked inside the vehicle - but that's female logic - I'll never understand it ).

But I think you'll find that the vehicle will not "auto lock" if there is a key fob inside it.

When we drove home in the D4 the same scenario occurred so few times. Also if you're sitting in the vehicle with the doors close you can lock it with the fob. Haven't tried super lock in that situation though.

That way, I can't lock the fob in the car, and it is only 1 more push of a button as I am walking away.
You are so right. Not a D4 but on my wife's old BMW 320Ci it was possible to open the boot without unlocking the car. Down at Coogee one day some idiot (who shall remain nameless) managed to shut the keys in the boot.
It cost me heaps (not just the dollars for taxi home to get the spare keys) but months of comments from SWMBO.

This was in a 3 so not sure if the same applies to a 4 and not auto locking related but.?

Is was getting some chlorine for the pool this arvo. Opened the top rear door and took out empty drum. Due to having a cargo barrier, being parked right out the front and a bit of laziness I left it open. Locked the car, horn sounded as expected and car locked. Returned with new drum, placed it in back, closed door and everything was locked. Luckily I hadn't put the key inside when I lifted the drum in.

As I said not about auto locking but thought it was worth sharing.
