is this a conspiracy theory?
Being a new D3 owner I have been keen to soak up lots of info on the car.
One thing I have been intrigued about is the fact that a blown bulb can cause the car to blow a head gasket!![]()

Driving home today I was behind another D3... low and behold it had a brake light out. The car wasn't blowing smoke and hadn't jettisoned all is fuel. I'd seemed to be actually working. Is this possible??

The bulb filament for the brake lights burns through at one end causing the filament to bounce around and short to the taillight circuit or be intermittent. The brake circuit is used by some of the ECUs as an input to determine what to do and voltage spikes on the inputs are outside of the allowable parameters and errors are generated causing the ECUs to go into limp mode.
If the filament burns through and can't short there is no issue.
An intermittent brake switch can cause similar problems.
