Took a 160km round trip up to Southern's to pick up the e diff and transfer oil.Bloke in the spares dept took some convincing that the e diff requires different oil to the front diff.If you thought the Lifeguard6 price was exorbitant....check out the price for the 4 litres.If you do any creek crossings well worth fitting breather extensions or letting transmission cool down before wading.
Get home and go to file the invoice...wtf he has given me front diff oil....call him up and he still reckons the oils are the same!Mention BOT720 /SAF Carbon Mod Plus and eventually he concedes and confirms only 2litres in stock.....so another round trip.At least there was no attempt to claim the price difference.Makes you wonder though, if the mechanics go to the spares guy for the different oils required at servicing.

I had previous trouble with oils specifications and Southern.

They used incorrect engine oil on a service for my SDV6 and tried to argue the oil they did use makes no difference. So does not surprise me they don't recognise a difference in front and rear diff oils even if LR says differently.

Works very well, easy to use, no mess, no climbing under the car and before I got it I had a look on Youtube and found quite a lot of info, including a comparison between draining via the sump plug and evacuating with respect to contaminates remaining in the sump. The result may surprise.

Finally got around to changing the oils,simple job when you have the use of a hoist.Bit of a worry when I went to undo the filter housing.It was done up so tight it felt like the 32mm 'nut' would twist off!Engine oil showed OK with 5.7 litres,but took another 150ml to bring up to full.Transfer was full before the 1.6 litre went in.Front diff had a honey coloured oil probably Castrol SAFXO,replaced it with Castrol Syntrax red coloured, which I had over from the Defender transfer box.Fillers for the front diff and the transfer box are on the passenger side[LHS]the rear e diff it is on the drivers[RHS] side rear.NOT the larger forward facing plug on the passenger side.......oops! which has long pin on the other side of it.
Magnetic plugs had a bit of sludge on them, only the e diff oil and of course the engine oil looked fairly black.
As Kenl says the engine oil comes out in a rush straight into the chassis rail,luckily as I was forewarned,collected most of it,but still made a mess when the remnants dripped over the edge of the collection tray.Reused the sump plug.......be wary that the rubber washer does not dislodge and disappear with the old oil.
You could do the job with the vehicle at full height,with stands of course.
The Tom Thumb bottle with the pump and hooked hose is pretty much essential to get into the front diff and makes filling the others easy.
Had the transmission oil flushed and steel pan fitted by Global Automatics in Bibra Lake.
Vehicle has 90k kms on it,so should be good for a few years

Moving on to the diffs,I have some Castrol Syntrax 75-90, left over from the Defender days.It is not the Long Life variety,guess it will be ok if changed in 20/30K kms.The rear E diff requires Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus, seems Holden use the Castrol SAF Carbon Mod without the Plus. Anyone used this or Royal Purple Max Gear Mod Plus which is an alternative.
The transfer box needs Shell TF0753, another oil that is not easily available[B][some have used Royal Purple Synchromax][B], but like the E diff oil, only seems to be available from the dealer.
What are other DIY D4 owners using for their servicing requirements?Or does it mean a trip to the dealers....bottle in hand?

Ive just refilled the transfer on RRS 2.7 with Royal Purple Synchromax. The product crossreference says its a substitute for Shell TF0753. Although if you look at the Royal Purple vehicle lube guide, for RRS, it refers to "manufacturer"

Anyone been using Synchromax longterm?

Yeah have used syncromax for over 50 thou in my old 05 D3. My 09 D3 2.7 I use Nulon syntrans in my transmission and transfer case. Used Nulon Syntrans in the old D3 for around 70 thou. Motor I use Castrol Magnatec Professional A5 in a 20 litre drum is the recommended oil by Landrover $170 from repco had to order in. Hope that helps

I sent a technical enquiry to Royal Purple in Sydney and they have confirmed Synchromax is the correct substitute for TF 0753 in RRS Magna Steyr DD295 transfer case

I was surprised how small the volume is (only 1.5 litres) to refill the transfer. Others on here are concerned about the Defender, and enlarge casing to increase oil volume from 2.3 litres.
The drained oil looked in good condition, but i think i will change it more regularly in future

I have been using this Mityvac oil extractor ? example here Mityvac MV7400 OIL Extractor | eBay but you can get them in other on-line stores, about $120, hook it up, extract the oil, it's too easy. Also my particular version can be used to pump it in as well, though I have not used it. I think it might be a worry getting it clean enough to use it for new fluids.
