MICHELIN Latitude Tour HP compared to standard Wrangler tyres

Hi Nicki,
I have towed the same van now for over 40,000km and untill now have never had an issuie even with original wranglers on with 50,000km on them. The van allways tows great and is very well ballanced, have just got a wheel alignment its first so did wonder if this has contribited to the issue. Van and car are legal and with very good handling.
I then started reading the other article on the ATR's so think that it most likely is just them.

I have not had any scares without van but will of course have more weight on front tryes without van as of course do not run distribution bars. Fully loaded I run just over 300kg on drawbar always like about 10%
Can feel that the car is down on grip in the wet now where as before when tyres had more tred always felt very secure.

They would have done more but was setting off on 10,000km trip so replaced them. ATR's will not get close to this which seems odd. If not for whine would put wranglers back on tomorrow.

My wranglers have done 60k...about 5-10k left. 20k on my coopers which are used for touring and off-road only as they don't handle as well as the factory tyres around the burbs.

Wheel alignment and rotation every 10k.

Same deal here - I think I have a bit over 70,000km on the 18" Wranglers on my D4. The other 30,000km were on 17" BFG KM2 on various trips. I only got about 36,000km out of the first set of 18" Wranglers on my D3 - but that was before LR sorted out the front ball joints. Plus me moving from a XR6 and not driving the D3 appropriately. :wasntme:

My current set of Wranglers have about 4mm of tread left and are starting to make the dead wheel bearing noise. :angel:

Think I might also be looking into the Michelins.

Are the 18" Wranglers tougher than the 19s ... or does the extra air make them more durable.? I thought the OEMs were OK on my first Disco 4... great in the wet and dry. But started getting really puncture prone after 40K .... stones straight through the tread block!


Changed to Scorpion ATRs after 3 punctures in a week driving on forestry commission roads (not tracks), in a National Park.


Loved them for ages but lost faith after I had an incident in the wet that almost cost my son and I our lives. I thought it may have been a fluke ... but reading a few other stories now .... not so sure!

What's the question? Are you commenting on my question regarding the 18" Wranglers possibly being more durable than 19"s, or my experiences? Context would help heaps.


Just in case....


My vehicle was an MY10 3l Discovery 4. Stock standard with the OEM supplied Wranglers (255/55/19) ... until the punctures.


Then, same size Scorpion ATR on the same D4 .... still stock standard.


At some stage I'll be looking for new rubber for my MY13 SE D4 ... but I don't think I'd go down the Scorpion ATR track again....which is disappointing as originally I thought they were a great improvement on the Wranglers.

Not sure of the answer Kev - as I haven't tried 19" Wranglers. I wouldn't trust them to go over sharp rocks - glad I have a second set of wheels with BFG KM2s for rough stuff!

Hey Mate,


I've been on Fraser 3 times with 3 different tyres and two different sizes.


First trip was with new Wranglers (255/55/19). It was very wet so no real issue with soft sand. Was concerned about rim-pinch as there are quite a few exposed tree roots, so sat on about 20psi.


Second time same size tyre but Scorpions .... wet again ... LOL!!!. I felt more confident with them, they felt like a much stronger tyre.


Third time with 285/60/18 Cooper Zeon LTZ ... raining again ... did I mention it rains a lot on Fraser Is ... LOL!!! No issue at all.


So some perspective ....


Morton Is has very similar sand to Fraser but probably not quite as deep. I've been there quite a few times. Scorpions in very, very dry conditions at 18 psi .... sunk like I was on quicksand. First time I've ever been bogged in a D4 and had trouble finding the MaxTrax after the event. But that was only in one really bad area.


Very similar conditions a year late with the bigger Zeons .... idled over what I had previously been bogged in and straight after three other vehicles had been recovered.


Sundown National Park ... drove over rocks that are renown for shredding tyres with the Scorpions .... no damage at all.


Never really tested the Zeons in any serious wet road conditions.


Wranglers on both D4s have been in the wet on the road with no issues.


Scorpions scared me in the wet to the point I'm still very gun-shy when it rains.


If you were going to stick to a 19 and wanted them to be better off-road, maybe find one that is good in the wet but is slightly wider than the 255.


Not sure if that has helped.
