Nope... D2 chipped (nothing extra) still struggles to match a D3
Hi all,
Just wondering how a std d2 vs d2 chipped from trs vs d3 in power and torque compare, im guessing maybe d2 chipped is the same as d3 std, most seem impressed by d3 get up and go so just curious.

I can tell you my chipped/intercooler upgraded/exhust upgraded D2 TD5 comes no where near my D4 3.0lt
Neither in performance or economy.

Yes I agree also about the 2.7l economy Vs the D2, our chipped D2 was heaps better on economy over our current D4, to and from work our D2 was always around the early 10l/100ks, our D4 gets early 12l/100k, on the highway they were about the same, the D2 towing was 13l to 14l/100ks, best being 12.3l/100k, the D4, 15l to 16l/100ks, with a best economy of 14.6l/100ks.

I have to agree with Andy and the others, my D4 3.0l TVD6 is better in every way than my chipped D2a. Power and torque is more broadly spread through the rev range, a wholly different experience. What is more you know that the D4 tune is wholly within the manufacturer specs and there is no EGT gauge to monitor and worry about engine longevity when you give it a boot full. My D4 will tow my 1.5T boat like it is not there, the D2a always laboured and it was a struggle keeping EGTs below appropriate thresholds.
Have to agree that fuel economy is not always vastly better. I was getting about 11-12l/100km out of the D2a and get about 10-11l/100km out of the D4.
Cheers,
Your D2 was carrying a bit of extra weight Andy (and no I am not referring to the Driver!), but the 3L is miles ahead in performance.
The Td5 D2 can definitely be modified to match a stock standard 2.7 Tdv6 D3 when it comes to power to weight ratio, torque to weight, and even on a per litre engine capacity basis. But what you don't get is the well matched 6 speed auto and relative ease at which the D3 delivers that power and torque.
My modified Td5 D2 is quicker from 0-100 than a stock D3 but I need the work the engine hard and crash through the gears knowing full well I am pushing more torque through the driveline than it what it was designed for. The D3 appears calm by comparison and delivers the performance in a quiet unassuming way - hiding the fact it is pushing more weight around.
Of course a re-chipped Tdv6 would be quicker again.....and so the cycle begins again... (-:
Shamirj,
My D2a was chipped and went very nicely. Last year the same questions led me to taking an SDV6 D4 for a test drive, I wondered what I might need to do to it to give it the grunt that I want.
All I can say is that they have come a long long way in a few years and I now own one and wonder why anyone would bother looking to chip these...
I think from memory, my TD5 pushed about 340 350 Nm max.... while the D4 is heavier, the 600 Nm it produces is awesome
As the others have highlighted, they are like chalk and cheese.

Whilst the original question was about the 2.7 D3, and this only put out 445Nm. The 3L takes the torque up to what had become expected from a modern turbo diesel at 200Nm per litre capacity.
If the D2 to D4 comparison is chalk and cheese, then this must make the D3 chalky cheese..... (-;
