Oil change by evacuation

I use a bit of hose that fits over the cars extraction tube and the tube on my extractor, I have no idea what the size of any of them are.

I may have even put some electrical tape around the pump tube to build up the size? Can't remember, but so long as you get a seal it will suck.

For what it's worth it takes longer than I thought and once it starts sucking air let it all rest for a few minutes and try again. Also back off and or change the oil filter as I've read that this lets more oil drain into the sump.

I can tell you two things
-Our 'mericun cousins run their outboards harder than Ozzies
-They love doing oil changes via extraction

Argument is that the amount of oil let in sump is insignificant
Extractor makes oil changes easy

I would extract - then drop the plug into a clear container
On that I would then decide the way forward

I have used an extractor for Volvo marine diesels ... you complain about slow try waiting on a 20L sump!!!! Best mod ever was to replace the sump on that engine with a stainless model with drain plug.... at haulout water And detergent into bilge pull the sump plug and oil comes out the drain plug at the transom into a bucket.

Whats your Disco? The Mityvac smallest tube is 5.7mmOD, this will not fit down the extraction tube on my D4. Is a tube actually inserted down to the sump or a seal with tube attached at the top??

You don't stick the extraction tube down the LR tube. You use a small piece of hose to join the extractor to the tube in the engine bay.

The only time you stick the tube down into the sump is on cars not specifically designed for extraction, where you might shove it down the dipstick tube.

Well thank you DiscoJeffster, Im starting to think I missed something somewhere in all my searches about the process of oil extraction from that narrow tube. Any hints on what tubing and how strong the seal needs to be:question: Cheers

Sure. I'm using a piece of 6.4mm fuel hose around 2-3 inches long that fits both to ends to make an air tight seal. See image below as an example.

A cable tie on the joints will ensure an airtight connection.

I got mine on eBay. Search Pela oil extractor or Hilta brand for examples. Can get them from marine stores too as most marine engines use extraction.

make one, grab a vac brake bleeder (hand pump or pnuematic venturi type) some 6mm air hose an old 9kg bbq bottle and some fittings.

empty the bottle, take the top off of it, drill 2 5.5mm holes in a suitable blanking plug, fit the blanking plug stick 1 piece of 6mm hose into one hole and use it for extracting the oil and fit a short piece to the other hole to attach the brake bleeder.

hook it all up and evacuate the gas bottle and it'll draw out the oil for you.

HOWEVER.....

in most cars it wont get the last .5-1 liter of oil as the dipstick tube doesnt extend into the deepest part of the sump where the pick up is. on a tdi300 for example it only goes into the shallow part of the pan up near the front of the engine.

you can fit an adaption to the dipstick tube that allows you to use it as an extraction tube as well as retain the functionality of a dipstick but you have to drop the pan and install a metal tube.

you can also fit a remote drain to an existing drain plug which is usually as simple as some suitable sized elbows and hoses with a stop cock and a blanking plug on the drain end.
