Transfer case input shaft seal depth

Can anyone advise the correct depth for the seal on the transfer case input shaft? The WSM shows a particular fitting tool but no depth measurement for the seal if the tool is not available.

The seal in mine was replaced as good practice after 150K when the gearbox was overhauled but the new seal was fitted too deeply exposing a small hole in the casing causing oil to leak. I'm concerned that the hole might be meant to be exposed on the inside to supply oil onto the seal perhaps rather than blocked by the seal.

    TIA.

Doesn't seem like your luck has changed Graeme!

I know its horrible, but your stories are certainly interesting.

I used you as an example of 'there's someone worse off than me' when my engine needed to be replaced.

    Regards

Graeme, how was your rear main when you pulled the transmission off? Mine is still leaking but has reduced from what it was a few months ago.

I'm just trying to avoid the next seal from being incorrectly fitted! But you're quite right - the overall cost of fixing the gearbox is significant but still not as much as I lost selling my first TD5 D2 with a destroyed head or the cost of failed engines that have occurred in some D3s.

Bob, I thought of your main seal problem and was going to have mine replaced even though there was no sign of it leaking, also good practice while the gearbox is out. However there's a timing ring pressed onto the crankshaft after the seal is fitted and that timing ring is expensive and requires a special tool to align it. Also a special crankshaft locking tool is required for removing and refitting the flex plate crankshaft bolts and I couldn't find one to purchase. Hence I took the punt and didn't have the seal replaced.

Edit: At the last minute I contemplated having the gearbox job done at a LR specialist workshop that would have the tools but decided against the idea as the work had become urgent and the local mechanic could do it immediately.

Its all better now. The first new seal was ever so slightly too far in which allowed oil to escape from a drain hole from the bearing. The exposed hole wasn't visible but was detected using a small pick.
