Hi,
Something I have to change in the near future. I believe there is a write up on Disco3.co.uk

Hey guys my Disco 6 TDV6 is up to 160,000 and I figure it may be a good time to do the timing belt plus that other belt at the back. I was told recently that I should also replace the alloy plate that has the timing belt tensioner attached to it as it's alloy and has been known to fail. So apparently there is a new plate that's stronger I'm supposed to buy.
Anyone know what the plates called and where I should get one. I was thinking of doing an order from Rimmer Bros UK and getting the lot.
I got a quote from British off-road and was told $2000 for timing belt plus the price of the plate. I usually take their quotes and figure under half their price is what I should actually be paying
If anyone could give me any good advice It'd be really appreciated!!!

The plate is the oil pump housing. Its a reasonable job and parts alone cost me around $1000 all up so I could see someone charging $2000 to do the job.

Of course a DIY is going to be less than half of the cost of having it done for you ... but then you don't have to do the 'hard yards' yourself ... and you need to have a certain amount of technical knowledge in a specialised area of the vehicle.
The Timing belt is not a whack the bits off and wack in the newie - especially in a diesel, I once had a performance vehicle that had a timing belt put back on with a 1 tooth misalignment and this caused timing problems until replaced the second time - done by the dealer mind you.
I would suggest that there are a few 'maintenance' jobs that are best done by an expert over the local bloke and this is the first in the list .. anyone can bolt on a new compressor or exhaust or the like but this one is different.
I am not sure about your 'British offroad comment - I have found them to be reasonably priced with labour costs always balanced to the job at hand(using my limited understanding of the mechanical process required).
You comment is misleading if you are going to do the job yourself - if you are going to do so - would you not be better off getting in touch with a UK supplier and starting at that point rather than making BOF sound expensive.
If they are a little more than your local 'common and Garden variety' repairer then it would be for the specialised nature of their expertise over and above a 'brand based rip' (reads dealer).
Just a comment and not intended to start a text war ... I take my vehicle to them all the time and have never been disappointed with the work or the labour cost - IMHO above all you can rely on both their advice and know when the job is done it is not going to 'come back'.
Good luck with the job, I know once that is done (if it was mine) I would feel a lot better driving as the results of a belt breaking are devastating.
I gathered this information from somewhere, might have been here... These are the parts needed to do the front and rear belts, oil pump and crank seal:
1 x LR016655 front timing belt kit (includes new belt / tensioner and tensioner bolt)
1 x LR013487 upgraded oil pump housing
2 x LR1311306 idler pulleys
1 x LR009324 water pump
1 x LR1102415 front crank seal
1 x LR002458 front crank bolt
1 x LR019115 fuel pump belt and tensioner
Plus one of these kits to hold the timing system exactly still http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rove...item58bfd7843c

Definitely not doing the job myself that would be the end of my Disco!
I just got a quote from Pacific Land Rover. $1200 for timing belt and rear belt. Compared to $2000 from British Off Road. Think I'll book it in. I'm up for the oil pump if it's not already done though![]()
AS mentioned I have no experience in this Robo ..
But I wonder if, as the blokes have said that the parts you need are $1000.00 and Pac LR say they will do it for $1200.00 and BOR say $2,000.00
It sounds like someone is quoting an a whole job and someone on half a job ?
As I say .. are you sure they are quoting on the same level of work .. Its my experience that it costs more than $200.00 to install $1,000.00 worth of parts.
If you are spending X amount on labour to get into an area of maintenance but you don't do all the bits ... you may find the water pump starts leaking (or similar un-replaced part) fails (Possibly soon) - just down the road ..
A leaking pump can cook the donk just as easily as a failed Belt..
As I say I do not have any experience in this (as I have a V8 and it doesn't have a belt = chain) but with any quote I would ask what the quote includes before going for one over the other ..
I hope this is taken in the spirit of constructive comment as it is intended.
Yes I have a list of what I want done so I'll let you know if how I go hopefully I'm booking it in today.
He did quote $1200 for both belts that was labor and parts.
I'll keep you posted!!
