Roof rack / roof bars please school me

My sight is the much chop at the best of times, could you have posted a smaller picture?

Just posted so I keep in the thread, me same as yourself I'm going to fit a LR tank and don't want to pay the $3500 + for the dual wheel carrier, looking for other options, all I want to do is store the spare wheel safely and nothing else. On top of the bonnet like a Deefer whilst looking pretty good could hamper forward vision somewhat, plus there could be some structural issues with the bonnet as well............

Ean, I got my Rhino tracks from a roof rack specialist in Brisbane as a separate item. They fitted mine but you can DIY too.

Or you could get LR equivalent ones on Ebay, both short and full length. One example at link below (no idea about quality etc just an example)

Or you could go direct to LR.

I have the full length knock off rails as per above (note I bought them without the cross bars and used wider Rhino ones.) I don't believe they fit quite as well as the original LR ones (VPLAR0074). No problems at all fitting them, I just think the fit in the gutter channel could be more snug. But for about 1/3 of the price I'm happy with them.

The wider Rhino (VA137B) rails don't protrude past the body of the car and allow me to fit more up there and mount my awning. Rhino feet are part # RLT500.

I have ordered my Rhino Pioneer rack and track option, I have gone the narrower option as Im not keen on the extra hang over if the originally designed discovery tray.

Ill post up when installed, cant wait!!

David, I'm looking at these non-genuine rails as well. Are you still happy with them ? Any idea if they're the actual LR parts just sold without the LR logo, or a clone that is approximately the same dimensions ?

I got the Rhino Pioneer, but went the 1.3 metre width. I think 1.5 metre long ... the recommended size from Rhino's web page.

While wide, they actually stop inside the vehicle width ... they are wider than the roof, but the sides of the Disco have "tumblehome" they are curved. If you drop a vertical ruler down the side of the edge of the roof rack, the ruler will hit the vehicle's sides, about 120 or so mm downwards from the roof rack. Or just below the top of the windows. Excuse the poor English ...

So, the wider is better IMO. And for loading, you can stand on a tyre, and haul yourself up with the roof rack - a narrower one would make that more difficult.

You can access nicely from the back, via the tailgate (brilliant).

Mine stop where the roof goes down ... wind noise is very slight. The only wind noise I've noticed was in a strong cross wind. I carried a tyre at the back though. And my road tyres are a tiny bit noisier than stock ones, so they mask some wind noise ... but its not there except in a very strong cross wind, and then, only for a minute. Must have been some turbulence.

My bars fit on the Rhino bars ... and it feels low. So far, I've not had a car park issue. But I have to remember, that when the tyre is on board, I will have a car park issue!!!

I love the look of the smaller one and it is just as Practical as the weider 1 I find I just finished the trip and I had a 20 inch spare on the roof quickshade 20 litre bottle of water and there was plenty more room left I have seen the recommended size on Discoveries since and then they look disgusting compared to narrower version I'm on my phone at the moment but can post pics if you want to see it
