Mounting rear Anderson socket & towing socket electrics

I need to mount my rear Anderson connector and for the most part folks seem to have put them behind the tow hitch cover. And its the default position for the tow sockets.

I'm using a Mitch hitch which is permanently mounted and I was thinking of trimming the hitch cover so it too could also be permanently mounted however I use the rear Anderson quite a lot and I was wondering if any one had come up with an elegant solution for mounting it externally.

Naturally the follow on from that is whether or not any one has found an elegant solution for mounting the tow sockets externally.

    Thanks

Heaps of people on here have showed examples of what their auto electrician has managed to fabricate to hold the brackets. When I got my wiring changed to a 12 pin flat the auto electrician just put together a little bracket to mount it to the original hole, took him 10 minutes.

Not sure I've seen any whilst still using the Mitch Hitch though. God that thing is ugly.

I wouldn't use an Anderson Plug for HD trailer electrics as they can fall out because they have no positive locking feature like a trailer plug.

I actually saved the fridge contents of a bloke with a D3 on the GRR when his lead to the trailer snagged on something on the road crown, fell out then self destructed. Luckily I had a couple of spares.

Supercheap sell a HD 2 pin plug with positive locking which takes 50 amps.

I like Anderson plugs and have them for my compressor and 240V inverter but from my experience would not use them to connect a trailer.

    Thanks for the input chaps.

What I was looking for was an elegant solution to mounting the Anderson outside of the factory position if its at all possible. As you say stacks of examples on the stock position but nothing so far externally.

I'm quite happy with the rear Anderson. I don't use it to connect to a trailer, it runs lights, compressor, jump starts etc. etc. fridge when parked up.

I've fitted my plugs to the underside of the bumper. A 12 pin flat on the passenger side of the towbar and an Anderson on the drivers side. There is an existing screw on each side which is used for one mounting point and another added to each. I placed a but of rubber between the housings and the plugs as I found that water runs down the bumper surface and accumulates in the plug housing. This has been very effective and there has been no sign of water since adding this. The Anderson housing is by Trailer Vision but there are others.

Question remains, you are after an "elegant solution" after fitting a Mitch hitch?

Thanks for that. I've just been looking at the housing from Trailer Vision and was wondering where to mount it.
    Cheers .........

That sir is exactly the sort of info I was looking for, many, many thanks. What determined your placement of the sockets?

I particularly like the Trailer Visions housing. I'll be placing an order.

I have to ask though. What's with the "Mitch Hitch Hate" movement?

I wanted a solid 2" receiver to use with NATO and pin hitches and possibly the odd tool and its the business. Due to location there was no chance of seeing one in the flesh before buying so when fitted it does extend a few centimetres further than I imagined but I think it great & very well made.

What's not to love about it?

A couple of things lead to the final position. One being able to get a reasonable radius on the cable at the rear and clear the spare tyre. Another was a flat surface to mount them on and obviously proximity to the towbar.
The trailer harness is already on the passenger side and the Britex has a right angle exit at the rear which made it easier to route the wires. For the Anderson I followed the driver side door sills, behind the cargo area panels then out through a grommet that is under the polystyrene packer for the jack. The grommet hole takes a electrical conduit panel fitting on a 90 elbow with a short section of conduit. The B&S 6 cable is sealed with some adhesive lined heatshrink and routed behind the bumper.

I was amused by the request for an "elegant" arrangement. The Mitch isn't exactly subtle!

Neat install, however if that was on my vehicle it would have disappeared years ago (torn off).

For some peoples usage it would be excellent.

You could fabricate a bracket to clamp behind the White socket, bent at 90 degrees and mount the Anderson off that so it sits above...

    Great stuff thank you.
Subtle its not but I was amused because ScottD4 wasn't holding back either.
