Thread: What 4x4 recovery kit to take on Kimberley trip?

Personally I would not leave the recovery tracks behind. Are they similar to maxtrax?

Long handled shovel - Definitely take.

Compressor - Definitely take

Snatch strap and shackles - Definitely take.

Recovery Tracks - Probably won't take - quite bulky

Exhaust Jack - Not sure - Its very bulky.

Hand winch - Might take, I've never needed it to date though, and its heavy



Anyone have any thoughts on must-have recovery gear along that WA coast region?

Had all of the above except vehicle mounted winch and over Tanami, Cape Leveque, Mornington Wilderness 4wd self-drive, El Questro 4wd self drive, Old Halls Creek road to Wyndham, Bungles, Mitchell Falls, GRR didn't need anything other than the tyre plug kit, ratchet tool to remove wheel nuts and the compressor to lower pressure on sandy creek exit. Peace of mind to have all the gear but unless it is wet the worst obstacle will be the limits placed by your tyres.
Would recommend though rear window protection when towing - losing a rear screen to a stone visiting Old Halls Creek. Lucky we could get one in 3-4 days in Broome, otherwise things would have got very dusty!

I would find some room for the Maxtrax. They are so useful and with them you can get out on your own and not have to rely on another vehicle.

Not Maxtrax no. They are the yellow Aldi special. They don't nest together as well as Maxtrax, and only have two.

Yes I have the tyre plug kit too. Should have mentioned that

Good point about the rear window protector. Need to look into that again.

One more for consideration is a bonnet bra for water crossings. There's a few that, depending on season and time you are there, can be worth taking one. A few more safety items for consideration:
1. base plate for jack. we carry normal jack, a low height hydraulic version and a hi-lift
2. ground sheet to lie on to get under car etc. can double as bonnet bra with a few occy straps
3. windscreen repair kit by 4
4. second spare, regardless of what tyres you are using
5. ensure your camper trailer has recovery points and fit a couple of bow shackles and if it does have a pair then a bridle as well
6. with our hi-lift we always carry the wheel lifter kit as it makes for an easy way of lifting a wheel, car or camper to put a matrix under or fill in a hole. But as a warning if you don't know how to use one don't bother they are dangerous in unskilled hands. But can also double as a hand winch
7. Obviously all the spares listed in the AURLO website
