Have you checked in the 'V' of the V6? My understanding is there are some plastic components (water housing outlet) which can leak.
Hi all
2005 D3 hse tdv6 @ 238000Km.
My cooant reservoir needs topping up approx 500mls every 4-5000Km / 3 months. The engine oil appears normal.
No obvious coolant leaks.
Is this common? Do I have to think about head gasket probs as with my (ex) td5?
Thanks,
-Wasa

Hi Wasa57,
Shorty 57 is bang on the money, can you smell hot coolant at all after you have been out for a run? The water will continue to drip into the V of the engine until the heat of the engine can't evaporate the water any more, then you get a trickle of coolant coming from the back of the engine and dripping down the gearbox bell housing, this also puts you off the trail because the housing is at the front of the engine.
The housing is pretty cheap and if you are handy with a set of spanners you'll manage just fine. When you buy the housing buy two EGR pipe clips, you will more than likely break either one or both of them. Make sure you fill up with LR coolant. If you go to Land Rover for the parts it is called an water outlet housing. Bleeding the cooling system on a TDV6is a bit more complex than just filling up with coolant, there is a procedure you are best following it.
I got a clear piece of plastic tubing and stuck it into the V and sucked the spilt coolant out, the tube was about a meter and a half long, coolant doesn't taste to good. I found about a litre and a bit in the V of the engine I was quite surprised actually. Pity you don't live a bit closer I think I have a spare one in the shed, I haven't seen it for a while though..............
This is my slant on things anyway.

+1 for the plastic housing...
We just had ours done, it was cracked and the spanner twirler found it while doing some other (serious) work. Replaced, of course. He says he had another customer who suffered a catastrophic failure, resulting in a total and rapid loss of coolant. Did some serious damage.
The other work? A few years ago the wife inadvertently filled the diesel D3 with petrol. The sensors detected a loss of fuel viscosity and we thought we got away with it. Last week the high pressure pump failed, no doubt contributed to by a lack of lubrication when the petrol went through.
Still, the timing belts were due to be replaced in a couple of thousand Ks, so we got them done at the same time as the twirler was working in the same area.
I have just had my Water Outlet Housing LR073372 replaced. 9/2009 manufacture so just 6 years old.
Coolant started to be needed to be topped up. Never needed any before. Quickly started needing more over a couple of weeks.
This forum has been a pretty accurate predictor of problems so far with:
1. Lower Control Arms @ 80K
2. Front wheel bearings @ 118K
3. Water Outlet Housing at six years
Hopefully following recommendations on steel pan and oil change will prolong the transmission thingy.

Gerry
Wasa.
Going back to TD5 days, you need to do the TD5 test.
Find a suitable "catch can".ie any 300ml softdrink bottle and cable tie it in a position with the overflow bottle discharge in its neck.
If you are catching coolant here, replace the coolant cap and pray hard.If its not the cap it can only be a head gasket.
GOODLUCK.
