Just on trips, I leave the mount on all the time though.
The mount itself doesn't obstruct the front left at all.

I saw a mount that used a suction cap on the lower windscreen with an adjustable length rod that rested on the dash (with suitable protection) to allow the tablet to be located over the front of the dash. I can't find details at the moment but will keep looking. The vehicle owner who does a lot of outback travelling reported that the mount does an excellent job.

Here's the one for larger tablets and there's one with a grab for smaller tablets.

Might have to use good double-sided tape on the suction cap.

Thanks Graeme - the advantage of the Arkon system is that it is infinitely adjustable, but it looks a bit flimsy.
I use RAM products which are quite sturdy and looking at their website they have a longer arm that can fit the mount that I already have - but it is not telescopic adjustable like the Arkon is
RAM Long Length Double Socket Arm for 1.5" Ball Bases
I have used Arkon stuff in past but found the mounts had too much play in them compared to RAM mounts. This made them vibrate even on highway roughness roads. The RAM X mount that I now use is much more stable than the Arkon system. The main disadvantage is that I could hold both my phone and a small tablet in the Arkon tablet mount (not at the same time) but I have to change RAM X mount sizes to switch between devices now.
Cheers,
The Ram seat mount is a good thing. Yes it moves but it's better than being fined for blocked vision and keeps it low in an accident....big rear ender a dash mount iPad Air will find the air before being imbedded in a kid in the back centre seat if you have that filled. Cheers
My Ram Mount iPad holder uses the 1.5" ball and triple suction cap. It has the long arm that lowers far enough so the iPad is virtually sitting in the dash centre stowage area. It doesn't restrict my view when driving, but I am fairly tall.
Used it when crossing approximately 1100 dunes in the Simpson desert last year. It is solid and never moves.
I first trialled the Ram floor mount system that attaches an alloy rod onto the passenger front seat bolt but it swayed around too much for my liking.
