I had the same thing yesterday. 18 month old D4.
Soft sand but not seriously boggy, car came to a stop, stuck her in low range and tried to reverse back. The chassis was clear of sand.
Tyres could have gone down a bit more is guess.
Turned the wheels and i reversed, all was going well if a bit revvy, but it was slowly backing up, then BANG CV EXPLODED!Grease and ball bearings everywhere. I was super surprised, as weve driven this section of beach many times. Snatched out by an old Holden UTE.. Humble Pie
At least landrover care is a Top service, she's gone off on a flat bed to be fixed. 860KM to the nearest dealer!
Left me with a Toy Motor Prado, it's rough, but it goes...
Confidence in D4 sand with 19 rims is now dented.
CV joints on the majority of 4WD vehicles are weakest when those two / three actions are done.
Reverse and Turning ( full lock worst) and heavy throttle usage.
It is not a L/R isolated problem, more a driver education thing sorry.
2014 SDV6 HSE - LLAMS, Tuff Ant Tree Sliders, Tuff Ant 18" rims, Nitto Ridge Grappler tyres 265/65 R18, Custom Lipo4 battery, Custom Drawer storage system https://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64
The extended height turning and torque input from that monster of an engine can do a lot of carnage with CV joints. Even on sand. Maybe the fact it didn't happen much before is that the previous models had way less torque on tap?
Last cv breakage i saw was a d3 with mudders full lock lots of loud pedal in extended mode. On rock. Kind of expected that to happen!

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
doddsy, sorry to hear that.
I must say, I've been back on sand since that episode a number of times and my confidence has been restored.
Last trip was to Fraser a month ago and the car dealt with sand without raising a sweat - and that's on my 20"s. I suggest you do what I did - schedule in another trip to the sand as soon as the car is fixed

You would have to be a **** stirrer to link this thread to the D4 vs Defender thread,, nice to see a civil useful conversation.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
apologies to Socrates
Clancy MY15 110 Defender
Clancy's gone to Queensland Rovering, and we don't know where he are
I'll be back in the sand as soon as I get the car back.
We live in Exmouth, sand driving is a daily occurrence for me.
That's why I was surprised when it broke.
We've de bogged ourself plenty of times and driven that stretch of beach lots.
Driver error? Maybe? but i expect an $80k 4wd to reverse in sand without snapping CV joints. The only education I have had is that the disco has a weakness in this scenario.
If the car can't handle extended mode( which it selects itself when bogged) and reverse maybe it should be smart enough to stop it , or strong enough to take it.
I wasn't exactly rock crawling with 35 inch tyres on. Stock standard wheels on a beach that everyone drives on.
Ah well, live n learn. Hopefully it'll come back better than ever.
