    Why this fault code

    Hi all, I was having a play with the IIDTool yesterday, a fault code scan came up with PCM-Engine SDV6

    ? P004A-00 (28) Turbo/supercharger boost control solenoid B circuit/open.

    I have not reset it yet as I want to understand what vehicle operating conditions might lead to this type of fault.http://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smilies/confused.gif

    My car is MY13 D4 and has done 46k, I do a lot of towing (60% of the 46k at least)and just recently completed a trip to Darwin and back from Adelaide. There has been no engine check lights or warnings displayed in the IP so a low level fault perhaps.

    At some point I will reset it and see if it re-occurs but for now the question is "why". Anyone have any thoughts.

    I assume you've had a look in the workshop manual

    "Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system check datalogger signals, Commanded Boost Actuator Control Bank 2 (0x0533), Boost
    Pressure Actuator Bank 2 - controller output (0x03DE). Refer to the electrical
    circuit diagrams and check the variable geometry turbocharger actuator vane
    control circuit for open circuit. This circuit consists of a twisted pair of
    wires between the engine control module and the variable geometry
    turbocharger actuator vane control unit. Check both of the circuits for
    open circuit. Repair wiring as required.
    Clear DTC and retest"

    Check the wiring. Suggests there may be a loose connector or break in the wire inside the insulation. Seeing that it didn't spit out a Check Engine it could have happeneed at any time since you last check for DTC's. Rough roads, heavy handed mechanic or similar could have triggered it.

    I'd reset it and check it very regularly to see if you can narrow down when it happens.

    Thanks for the info rufusking, I had considered a physical wiring fault which would lead to the code but decided that because no check light that it was unlikely, but a loose connection, maybe a bad crimp, some thing transient, some of the outback tracks we have been doing lately, yeah, I can see that. The car is still under warranty so the dealer can sort it out, I'll leave the code for them.

    Been meaning to buy the manual, problem is I start to poke around and play with things, I just want to explore and I need to resist until warranty is dead. I remember seeing workshop manual on the forum somewhere, I will go and have another look and jump in at the deep end.

    I wonder if the (28) in your reader is the number of times the fault occured.My Nannocom on the D2 would give you the fault code ant the number of times its been registered.

    Good question, I will look into it but I don't recall reading anything about that in the IIDTool manual. If it is the number of occurrences then it certainly points to a problem rather than an isolated incident, thanks.

    Thanks for the link to the manual, just bought a copy, hopefully not too much different between MY12 and my MY13, or perhaps some updates will become available.

    This hexadecimal number defines which status bits or flags are ON.
