It is a favourite with dealers, and not just Land Rover dealers.
I check my own pads and rotor and change them when required, it's not that hard and worth learning how to do if you don't want to be done over.
So about 6 months ago I had the Disco4 in for it's annual service (was on about 34,000km then I think) they rang me and told me it needed new pads and rotors, front and rear for ~$2,300.
I questioned why at such low km these things would need replacing and after some back and forth was told I could probably leave it another 6 months.
So I did, until a couple of weeks ago the brake wear light came on. I booked it in to the dealer and said nothing more than "The brake wear light is on"
So today when I dropped it off, I was expecting the call to say I needed new pads front and rear plus rotors.
To my surprise I did get the call, but to say I only needed rear pads (yes rear) and everything else was fine!
Now I'm not sure if I'm really happy, really ticked off, or really worried?!

SubscriberYes. We had a similar thing with a clutch on a Landcruiser and a local Toyota dealer. Clutch had been in because it was noisy and I was told it was ok even though there was a service advisory. As soon as the manufacturer warranty was expired, they wanted to fit a new clutch as it was "unsafe". It hadn't changed at all. They gave me a big spiel about how it should be done. Once I mentioned it was under extended warranty, they tried to backtrack but I forced the issue because they had said it was a "safety" issue.
Sadly there are some pretty unethical dealers out there.
Have had thah Toyota before as well, a 94 Hilux dual cab 2.8D.
Major service which involved pulling the front hobs off to grease the bearings. This entailed pulling the brake calipers off.
the hilux had that underbody anti-rust goop applied, very thick honey coloured stuff. anyway the bolts holding the calipers were coated in it.
Upon picking up the vehicle I asked if the front bearing had been re-packed, "yes sir, they have" hmmm put my head underneath and no sign of a socket being applied because if it had the goop would have come off the bolt heads.
I pointed this out and there were lots of back peddling. Go the bearings repacked on the spot. Shonky buggers
I remember years ago in a WA regional country town, a local garage was known as being "suspect" in much of the work that they claimed to do on customers' cars.
I booked my HQ wagon in for a service one day, and checked the invoice when I got it back - service included replacement of spark plugs and I had been billed for six of them.
Now before taking the car to the garage, I had marked underneath all six spark plugs with women's nail varnish, with a line drawn from the cylinder head onto the spark plug. On inspection after the "service" - not one of the plugs had even been removed from the head, let alone replaced.
Suffice to say that I got treated like royalty at that particular business from then on, with future services etc costing me nothing but parts cost.
Cheers .........

LOL Dan, yep and just to give you an idea what XXXXXXXX reputation is like with a few of us over here:
XXXXXXX have attempted to charge for:
:new front brake pads and rotors. The same set that lasted another 50 000k's and still had 3.2mm of pad and over 2 mm of rotor thickness left when replaced.
:12 spark plugs on a V8???
:10 ltrs of engine oil in the same V8??
:new OE. air filter when the one installed was an oil soaked UNI filter that clearly hadn't been cleaned!
:replacement compressor even though the one installed was a 3 month old AMK.
And that's just the ones I can remember... LOL
I guess they were aware we were all travelers and thought they'd take advantage....................
