On my now-gone MY10 D4 I discarded the original shocks at 30K, wore out genuine D3 shocks (65K and much softer ride) and after-market D3 shocks (45K) then went back to genuine 2012+ D4 shocks (not as harsh as the originals) all whilst using 17" rims with the last set of tyres P-rated. I gave-up with fixed valving shocks and bought a 2012 Vogue to get ecu-controlled shocks (CVDs). The Vogue's original 20" tyres were quickly replaced with oversize 20" tyres for a softer ride AND more reliable sidewalls and now my wife can travel many hours compared with only a couple previously.
