    service

    hi all,

recently had my D3 serviced for a few items which needed doing from independent dealer and was left somewhat disappointed. this is not an attack for this dealer but rather the comments i rec'd from them. i have had past dealings with them with mixed outcomes. i provided 3 new silicone hoses to be fitted to the TdV6 and they only fitted the two larger hoses stating they did not know where the 3rd smaller hose is to be fitted. they are supposed to be LR experts, i googled the hoses and found the answer. I'm guessing the smaller was is the harder of the hoses to be fitted so maybe they thought cant be bothered. it was part of the works to be undertaken. they must be working on D3's all the time just cant think why they would not know where the hose goes. how weird. 2nd issue i had was that they have never removed the oil pump housing to fit the newer with ribbing so timing belts done but was told more $$$ to remove front diff and sump to get housing out. apparently they had to look this up on the workshop manual, again why. they just do timing belts and never had probs with housing. do you really need to remove the sump and diff to be able to remove the oil pump housing. left me disappointed and thinking whether to use them again. welcome your comments.

There's one independent in Melbourne that has done great work on my previous D2, but I can't help but feel they struggled when I gave them a chance to work on the 2010 RRS. They didn't know model differences, and gave me advice counter to several other Land Rover mechanics.

There's another independent I previously gave a shot at the title and they were worse - told me the alternator was knackered when I could see from the diagnostic screen it was putting out 14.4V, and simply ignored my repeated requests to diagnose the thump in the rear which turned out to simply be sway bar bushes.

The technology is definitely getting beyond a lot of these guys if they're not highly trained and seeing a lot of the same cars all the time. I regard the skills and workmanship of the Melbourne dealers quite highly but their labour charges are through the roof, and obviously it's a bit tricky for them to be admitting to things like the auto transmissions not /really/ being fit for the life of the vehicle without servicing...

I would never go back to anyone who took that approach to servicing or customer service. The fact that they exposed your engine to an increased risk of catastrophic failure is unacceptable especially if you told them about it.

Did you end up replacing the oil pump? If not you should probably aim to do it sooner rather than later.

What localities are convenient to you? Perhaps some other indis can be recommended to you based on that?
    Cheers,

    Sean

    remove oil pump housing

Am certain Oil pump housing is on front of TDV6 and gets done when all front belts/pulleys idlers are changed (if it hasn't been replaced previously), should not require sump or diffs to be touched.
Am happy to be corrected, but I had it done recently and nobody went near my sump or diff.
The pump body appears to be in front and centre of motor.
I was lucky enough to travel over 300,000k before somebody told me I should change it because early models can fail.
