    D3 4.0L petrol towing

We are looking to pick up a 20ft van, total length around 27ft, late in January.
Whilst we are not planning a big lap in the van or frequent touring I'd just like to know if there is anything I should be considering doing to the car, adjusting the way I drive or service the car to cater for occasional a towing of around 3t of van. I have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller, towing mirrors and just about to add a rear Anderson plug.

If it's not been used much, I would check the condition of your OEM tow point. They have been known to become difficult to lock in place due to issues with the locking pin, etc.

Oops, forgot to mention that I have a Mitch Hitch already installed and that I'm replacing a much lighter camper trailer with the caravan. The plough is long gone....

    Should tow it easy.
Petrols will really chew the fuel compared to a diesel towing a heavy load.
Would be worth looking at a long range tank, both for range and buying fuel a bit cheaper when its available.

That 4L Petrol in the D3/4 must be a wonder engine!!

    My 4.6 V8 D2 Petrol would struggle towing 3T,,
(I expect my Disco to tow at signed speed limit)

No problems if its just down the road,,
    interstate is another question-

    A few extra gears Pedro.
About the same output as a STANDARD 4.0l D2 V8.

Just leave it in Sports Shift and drive to the conditions Ashes, there will be times when it will struggle to do the speed limit but look on the bright side you would still be overtaking Pedro in his 4.6 D2 if he was towing his van on the same road. ...
    Cheers,

Not sure if you have one but...if your van has LED lights, make sure you have a pulse buster. This will ensure the vehicle "knows" a trailer is attached and therefore adapting transmission programming accordingly and disabling the rear parking sensors amongst other things. It will also stop the D3 from continually "pulsing" the trailer lights.

The D3 incompatibility with LED trailer lighting cannot be solved by the simple resistors like the D4 so don't be tempted to go that route. Some have made equivalent devices to the pulse buster for themselves but if you don't have the inclination or the time to do that then the product is worth while IMO.
    Cheers,

    Sean
