Search pro tip ... use the "Google Custom Search" at the bottom left of every page. It searches the aulro domain only and works quite well.

I typically put in the most likely word or words and also include D4 (or D3 or RRS).
That almost always gets the results to focus in the D3/D4/RRS subforum.
Equally, if it's a Defender related subject include the word Defender instead.

Here's an example ... the first two threads I got just using the words D4 and Koni in the search.
The 2nd one was updated by Terry and others in October this year. Both are well worth reading regarding this topic, having good history.

Here's another thread last updated in January that comes up when you use D4 and Bilstein as search words.

I first learnt of this search method from a general post on best ways to search for stuff, which is under Rules and Guidelines

Great information in the links above but... Wow, now I'm confused. I thought the D3 air suspension struts were a one peace change the lot deal.
How do people split the air bag from the shock absorber?

Can you buy the air bag as a separate part or do you need to get the set and then just replace the shock when it wears out?

Yes they are replaceable as a complete assembly. Sorry I misunderstood your original question, thinking you were meaning the shocks because you mentioned factory versus aftermarket.

    Cheers,

Take a look at the fitting instructions from Koni:

    [ame]http://findershop.koni.com/files/pdf/2100-4069-manual.pdf[/ame]

Re cost - I think you'll find that the price of the Koni or Bilstein shock absorbers are about the same as the whole air strut assembly. Add to this the lack of success stories on using the above shock absorbers...

I've posted a thread about struts too because even though "search is your best friend" most of the info is from some time ago. Most of the threads have little or no current information.
I'm guessing that both bilstein and Koni have not solved their respective problems for Australian conditions as yet?
On my thread, I've been told that 05/06 rear shocks are different to 07+ models and the later ones may not fit the 05/06....?
This may or may not be the case but all the rear shocks advertised do not differentiate between the years, in fact state they fit all models 2005-2009.
I read where someone used D4 struts on the D3 because they are firmer .....anyone enlighten me?...my D3 has bar, winch and usual stuff, so better shocks are desirable, but not at any reliability cost.
    Cheers

In case people don't read your other thread, it appears that later assemblies and therefore D4 assemblies will fit earlier models. Even though the assembly part number does not supersede to later part numbers, the part numbers for both the shock and the air-spring individually supersede to at least the end of the D3 VINs.

I'm still wondering why anyone would consider Old Man Emu suspension for our models!
