    6 speed or 8 speed

Is there really a big difference between the two?
I'm looking at a sdv6 with the 6 speed auto but wondering if it's worth spending another 7-10k and getting one with a 8 speed auto.
Anyone that has owned both and what are the real life differences?

    Drive them both.
The 8 speed is very smooth. The paddles off-road are brilliant,I dont use them on road much at all.
I have a Territory XR6 turbo AWD,it has the same 6 speed as the D3/D4.Its nice,no where near as smooth. That one only has 60000ks on it.
The newer D4s also have better braking, improved terrain response and a few creature comforts so those items are worth considering,A BIG DOWNFALL are the 19" wheels

If he's considering an SDV6, they only come with 19 or 20 inch rims anyway, regardless of which year model & transmission.

The 18 inch rims only came on the 2.7 litre TDV6 in the D4.
    Cheers .........

I have spotted a white sdv6 Se in wa 2012 with 38000 kms on the clock with arb front bar and arb spot lights. It's very clean and full history. It has reverse camera but no navigation. They want $58000 as is, on top it's $1000 to truck it to Victoria plus on roads etc. will be around 63k drive away.
I'm just thinking do I spend more and find one with the 8 speed instead

I saw that too! That's a great price considering what it's still advertised for!
I'm thinking I want the 8 speed with updated terrain response etc. I like the new look of the front too esp with the led running lights.

Before buying, I had a loan of the 6 speed, and tried the 8 speed. I'd personally go for 8 speed.

I think if you talk to a few dealers you'll find a demo tdv6 (with the tech pack upgrade probably) for not a huge amount more and you'll have the balance of the 3yr warranty - 2012 car is now 4 yrs old and out of warranty (unless the owner was smart & purchased the extended warranty)

I love the smoothness of the 8 speed

    I had a MY10 SE and now own a MY 13 SE (6 & 8 Speed respectively).

They are both great boxes and surpass most cars you will drive. Unfortunately the Off-Idle lag has never been really fixed in either of them ... and I think it was more manageable in the 6 Speed.

I personally hate the way the 8 speed comes off idle just about every time but have adjusted to its nuances ....

I wouldn't lose a seconds sleep on the gearbox choice.

Even though it's a six speed our D4 never has any lag issues when taking off ....

I'm not fussed with the 8-speed in my 2012 RRV, much preferring the re-built 6-speed in the now-gone 2010 3.0 D4 although I had my own version of paddles on the D4 so the 8-speed's paddles are not extras. I also very much preferred the T-bar, even after 4 months to get used to the rotary selector. Many times I've had to wait until the steering wheel is straight to find the paddles whereas I would just bump the 6-speed's T-bar. On hot days I struggle to convince the 8-speed to even go to 8th let alone stay there at 100 kph but perhaps the 4.4 TDV8's extra high diff ratios and my larger tyres mean that its not a valid comparison with a D4.
