Cool Failed Cam Chain Disco 3

A bit of feedback. In 2015 Replaced the 2.7 V6 TD motor at great expense due to Cam Chain failure. I have some pics of the failed parts. It is interesting to note that the failure was on a single hardened link pin and it looks like at a joint link or a timing point as the link is an anodized blue color.
From my observations I am of the belief that the pin ultimately failed after a progressive stress fracture which may of existed for some time and possible relates to the manufacture process (heat treatment etc)

It looks as though the joining link was distorted during fitting, with more stamping pressure on 1 side causing a pin to crack at that time.

Such a small failure for such major consequences.

Is the chain listed on the service schedule for replacement?

I've read a similar failure mentioned on Disco3 with some doubt regarding the chain replacement schedule. It was in this <post> where the owner caught a failed tensioner just in time but someone else knew of a failed chain just like Don's. And this <post> mentions/links to a couple of other similar chain failures. Sounds like the chains are not a service item.

If you were to grind the heads off 1 link of the chain proper then you will be able to see if either of those pins show a fracture, which I suspect they wont.

How much the chain bends sideways is a test for the extent of wear.

Hi Scott, I questioned the dealer who did the engine swap for me and previously replaced the Timing belt on old motor 20,000 k before the failure and he said to do the chain it would be more than the timing belt service and total price about $5K and not on the routine list of things to do...

Hi Graeme, My broken chain has a bend deflection sideways of 25mm over a 297mm section, At 189,000kM and all services logged.

I don't know it that amount of bend indicates significant wear for a timing chain but it doesn't look bad to me. I still think the join link fitting was faulty at chain assembly. My bet is that if the whole chain was opened-up that no other pin would show a fracture.
