Then there is the other side of the financial profit/loss re parts and labor charges.

3.9 V8 - I just paid $550 for a distributor, $231 for the module to suit, $91 for a coil and $198 labor to fit them all.

Just to add to the ZF6HPxx gearbox oil. The ZF Lifeguard 6 oil was initially developed by Shell and does carry a shell part #, however we can not purchase from Shell oils. Suggest Shell "manufacture" for ZF. The "Shell" ZF Lifeguard 6 oil, is re-packaged for most vehicle manufactures using the ZF6 gearbox and includes Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar, BMW, and many more including Rolls Royce. If Repco can sell "retail" at $4?.00/litre and make a profit then I see no reason pay double for a "re-badged" product. I have 2 vehicles with the ZF6HP26 gearbox and buy this in 20 litre drums. If you are only replacing 5-6 litres of the 9.4 litre capacity in an oil change this is only half of the gear box oil volume. Suggest doing a further oil change after a short time, or the "Full Flush" to replace as much of the old oil as possible.

As I tow a three ton van I have been changing my tranny oil around the 50k mark. the HP6 oil I get direct from ZF in 20 litre drums at approx $27/litre (Nov 2015). Look up the ZF website then their local rep and order from there. My steel pan is a ZF branded product, but the filter is BMW as its the cheapest quality one I can source. Undoing the screws between the cross-member and pan is a challenge

One day the mechanical repair businesses will be few and far between due to this phenomena and then we'll hear the complaints from the public about where can i get my vehicle serviced or repaired? It is going to spell the end of many eventually.

The repair business will eventually go the way of the dynasores anyway as not many can really do much with the cars of today , which are too complicated and require to much attention to be really an asset to anyone outside the city any more. The prices for parts are getting ridiculous . My plan is when my current landy is due for the scrap heap , I am just going to get a new throw away Hyundai and enjoy my $ elsewhere .

As much as I have enjoyed my RRS I could have done without some of the drama these cars can cause , I am glad I bought second hand and not new .

There's a certain logic there Fatso - friend of friend is Hyundai exec and he predicts city cars will be plastic, electric motor at each wheel and disposable - this before 2020 - where does that leave us rural folk with properties and country requirements - eg pull something, push something, carry a lot! not to mention the travellers! Conversations with various 'mechanics' or 'facilitators' is that they don't want to carry stock, they don't want to repair - they just want to 'remove and replace - apparently saves time and costs. I'm seeing an auto-electrician next week and supplying not only parts but wiring diagrams - he is providing the expertise - and charging appropriately.

    Interesting topic

I don't have any sage like wisdom to impart, mostly replying to record this thread for when I need a tranny service(any sage like wisdom on where to find a "follow thread" button appreciated!

About parts vs labour, I guess it depends on how the individual runs the business. I know my old Porsche mechanic adds some profit margin on bits and pieces but then his hourly rate is around average and well below his skill and experience so I'm happy to let him provide the parts.
I'd also know if I took the car to any TDorH they may have trouble sourcing OEM parts and might be quite happy if I did the ground work for them.

The paramount thing is having a good relationship, this is what makes most business unsatisfying these days is the only consideration is given to price not service.
