I've read a few times that the L320 doesn't have as good engine air flow as the L322, and so turbos maybe more likely to fail. I'm not at all sure it's right but there you go.
All the RRS tdv8s will have the early interior.
They will have all the same issues as a D3 mainly due to age & km, eg an alternator will last about 100,000km, although I think mine lasted 250,000. Air springs/struts seem to begin to fail at about 10 years. Delphi OEM units seem to be the best choice.
The RRS & Vogue tdv8 have the same spec ZF transmission. There have been a few RRS, RRV, and D3s leave the factory without grease on the transmission output shaft, which resulted in premature wear and failure. As happened to my L322.
The EGRs seem to be more reliable on the tdv8 compared to the tdv6. Although there have been examples in the uk of the valve face cracking and bits destroying the turbo or motor. Emulators maybe a solution. Alternatively, replace the EGRs, parts cost about $1500 for both.
The 3.6 is a very smooth powerful engine, and matches nicely with the 6hp26 trans. It's great on the beach.
The L322 tdv8 is a much nicer touring vehicle IMHO for not much more money. I like the better tow bar and rear suspension setup, the suspension compressor being inside, and the larger interior and styling. But I'm biased.
I hope that helps.
Actually you might find the odd RRS 3.6 TDV8 with the newer interior. One of the partners in my boat had one like that, exactly the same interior as my 2010 RRS TDV6, he picked one up second hand 3 or 4 years ago, was one of the few made with the V8 before they dropped it from the range.
Having said that, I agree, you're probably better off with the L322 with the same engine, or a 2011 L322 with the 4.4 engine. Definitely a better long distance tourer than the L320.
Thanks for the info mate, I like the D4, Also, as well as the L322. SWMBO is pretty see t on the sport though. I reckon I could push her to a vogue, but she won't go the D4. I like the idea of the suspension comp inside the vehicle. That makes sense. I also forsee a good amount of beach work, another plus for the 8.

Most D3s and all D4s and all the RRS have a compressor for the suspension.
Unless you want to mess around plumbing into the sacred system best you pump tyres up like we do,the same way everyone else does;);););););)

Andy - the RRS suspension compressor is inside the cabin unlike discos underneath
Sean you'll also find (and so will SWMBO) the L322 much 'airier' for driver and passenger than the L320 Sport. Much less cramped and claustrophobic. After 3 years in my Sport, and having never driven an L322 before I bought mine, I'd now find the L320 far too closed in. There's also a heck of a lot more stowage in the L322, although unlike the L320, the back seats don't fold completely flat.
