Thread: 2010 d4 3.0 Oil leak. Source?

Check the drain pipe on the RH side of the sump just in front of the drain plug. I thought mine was leaking from the rear of the engine and at one stage suspected the rear main. However, it is the drain pipe.


Rovertech fixed it with a new O Ring last year but on my recent 13,000km trip on rough roads it started leaking again. They tried to fix it but made it worse. They have now sourced an over sized O Ring to try again. There are a lot of these leaks starting to happen on other cars and they are using my car as a guinea pig as mine is the worst so far! After using no oil for 8000km, on the trip back to Perth the oil level dropped by 2 bars due to the leak that was just starting to show up in Darwin.


A proper fix would be a new part for $400 plus body off to fit it according to Rovertech!

Wombat - this sounds suspiciously similar to mine from two months ago..

Turned out mine was a rear camshaft seal - first quote with a non LR mechanic was $3500 - the seal is only $7 but the whole body needed to come off because of the location.

Second quote was with LR - $950, they obviously have another way to get at the seal without taking the body off.

After being fixed the final price ended up down at $850..

Luke - I saw a RRS at my mechanics last week which had the body off to repair that seal. The way they would have to repair it without body if involves using multiple dentist mirrors and people with long/skinny arms. He reckons it is quicker and cheaper for him to remove the body. Your mechanic and his apprentice must be skinny!

Hey Jonesy, was that a landrover mechanic?

This was LR Brookvale - I didn't happen to notice any Ethiopian mechanics but then again, i guess you wouldn't!

Either way, it saved me a heck of a lot of money and I feel sorry to the owner of that RRS.

Ah - you used a Land Rover dealer... they would be sure to have lots of young/flexible apprentice mechanics (ahem), I mean "technicians".

My mechanic is an independent Land Rover mechanic. He recently has employed a LR tech with 20 years dealership experience, as well as opening a workshop.

Anyhow, I reckon the prices for both would have been similar - LR dealerships certainly know how to charge!

Maybe they only partly body off so don't have to unplug everything - just get enough space for a set of fat hairy arms

Or use a baby faced first year apprentice with feminine hands
