Thread: Extended warranty is it worth it

You'd better find out about exclusions. I've heard of a few people who have had extended warranties but the company didn't pay up.

Regrettably, I don't remember the details.

The warranties typically also include a list of exclusions that Mr Kannen said could be interpreted to make almost any problem exempt from coverage.

I will get it in writing from them that my add ons are ok beforehand

How has the vehicle been up until now?
I weighed it all up and figured $5k buys a lot of maintenance when it came time for mine.

Have you always had it dealer services and had a good relationship with the dealer? If so this goes a long way towards "good faith" for the 12 months after warranty.

I had a few fixes done in good faith without issue outside warranty - I also kept in mind that a vehicle must be fit for purpose and the expectation that engines and transmissions make it to 100,000km when correctly services would fall under that banner..

I didn't get the Extended warranty (which would be expired now) and touch wood, not a single issue.

It might be worth a cost-benefit exercise - to figure out what could need replacing within the warranty period.

For instance, you have 65,000km on it - so about 15,000km or so until the front LCAs will need replacing.

Other items which might go next (once you get over 100,000km) include water outlet, wheel bearings, alternator, starter motor, steering rack, etc.

Hopefully you have changed the ATF and gone to a steel sump for your ZF.

In the end, I really think it not only depends on your well you have it serviced, but also on your luck!

I risked it and never got extended warranty for my D4. In that time I had to replace the alternator and starter motor. That still wouldn't add up to $5k. FWIW, I bought extended warranty for my new D3 at the time I purchased it... everyone told me I was mad - it was $1400 back then. It did pay for itself after the front wheel bearings and steering rack had to be replaced - just before the extended warranty finished.

I've seen that you can negotiate the pricing on the LR extended warranty - but $5k is still a high starting point, IMHO.

So far so good but it has not done a lot of rough stuff even towing.

The extras I have should not effect the big items but insurance companies are not your friends.

As I am retired I am hoping this car will last a long time. Cant afford another one now.

I have had my car serviced by a LR specialist in Brisbane a couple of times (i.e. MR) as I was up there and the car was due. Even first major one.

I have found the local guys (in Canberra) very approachable and helpful in the past. They are a bit expensive but luckily you don't have to do that to often.

I will continue to use them where possible so hopefully I will continue to get good service.

I have never had an extended warranty on other cars, it didn't seem necessary. It does scare me a bit thaT such a big deal is made over it for LR.

I have a bit of time to consider my options and save the money if required I guess.

I think you have to negotiate at purchase time. I am getting a $300 discount as I had the antirust stuff removed because it is useless and they agreed.

It is always luck. Even if some of those things go I suspect it would be hard to claim on them.

Same deal is made in the Toyota camp so don't feel too bad

They're not a bad thing the D4s (or the D3s) - the old mans D3 had only done 27,000km since 2007 when he sold it to my BIL in 2013 for $35k.

It's now at 120,000km and been faultless.
