Have recently taken charge of the folks Disco 3 after they started experiencing erratic behavior. The vehicle was over-revving before changing gears and it had gotten so bad they weren't driving above 90km's an hour. After an initial search of the symptoms through aulro and one of the UK forums I cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors and the difference was immediate and like chalk and cheese.
Something still didn't feel quite right though with the way it was driving so I booked it in for a full gearbox flush and service. Having had that completed it is now behaving worse than it was prior. (we also had the solenoid's replaced in the gearbox while the pan was off). I have had a read through most of the transmission related threads I can find although I am only about halfway through the FAQ at the minute. The closest thing I can find is perhaps a voltage issue?
The symptoms as they are now are as follows: Under normal, gentle, acceleration the vehicle goes up through the gears without a noticeable hitch, under moderate acceleration the engine over revs at a gear change, drops back down and then catches up again. The change between 3rd and 4th is particularly bad with a strong lurch being felt. Under foot to the floor acceleration the vehicle revs to 4000rpm before changing but it doesn't appear too bad. Very occasionally I'll get a squark under acceleration.
I don't appear to have a "shudder" in the gearbox as others have reported, the vehicle now 310k on the clock and has the oil changed at around 50k to 60k throughout it's life.

What oil was used in the gearbox?? If it is not the genuine ZF this could be part of the problem. It appears same as I had with the Nulon.

Is there a filter inside the gearbox which hasn't been changed and is clogging up the oil flow?

The oil was lifeguard 6OEZF, filter was changed and the remark was made that the oil was black, had a burnt smell to it but no filings or metal fragments in it.
JC, the two codes that came up prior to service were something along the lines of a mismatch between engine speed and gearbox speed in 5th and 6th (not sure if that make sense, I can't recall the exact code). The TCU was reset and the latest software flashed at the service - I don't have a fault code reader, I'll try and get it read at the local mechanics in the next day or so to see what has come up since.
I've been considering trying Dr tranny but I can't help shake the feeling it's electrical and I'd rather work out what it is before throw that in. In my searching I haven't been able to find out a great deal on the transfer case, is that a separate oiled unit in these? And does it cause any issues?

Miss matched gear/ ratio and input/ oitput shaft speed discrepency faults are excessive torque converter lockup clutch wear and or excessive clutch slipping. At 310k its time for a rebuild....
And yes servicing a high km previously unserviced box is a huge risk in my experience. I accept no responsibility for the outcome , it is a lottery.

Thanks JC, that's the annoying part, the box has been done every 40 to 60000km since new. We kind of need it to last a few more kms before replacement (family wedding on the horizon), would it be worth trying a Dr tranny type product at this point?
The thing that had me puzzled was the massive improvement in gearbox performance post having cleaned the MAF, would this have just been a case of two dodgy components exacerbating each other?

So, a bit of an update, have now driven the vehicle around 2500ks since the oil change. The vehicle seems to be improving! Under heavy acceleration the front of the landy now lifts up as opposed to the high revving and slow acceleration we were seeing.
The only thing I can think of is that at the last oil change the wrong oil was used and the correct oil this time around has caused the vehicle to slowly improve. Thoughts?
