How much is TOO much oil used?

    Hey guys,

Just had the warning light come on in the car with "Oil level critically low". She's only done 10,400kms and I put about 1.5L of Caltex Edge 5/30 in it which brought it up to about mid way although that reading may not be accurate yet.

Even 1L per 10,000 seems like a lot of oil lost to me, with service intervals at 26,000, the car should have come with 5L of oil in the boot !!

Thoughts on how much oil these modern engines should lose?

    It's a 2016 SDV6 by the way.

    Cheers,

    Smocky.

Other warnings should have come up before you got that critically low warning. At 10000kms that amount of oil loss would ring my alarm bells, even if they do use a bit more when running in. FYI, the dash oil level gauge in the service menu amounts to approximately 1.5L between Min & Max.
Mine has never got to the 'Add 0.5L warning' even when I first ran it in, then new oil at 6 months (8000k). I think it's got down to two bars below full in between services since then, so about 400mm.
Keep an eye on it and maybe discuss with your dealer.

My TDV6 used about 1 litre in the first year and now no oil consumption at all. I believe it is normal for a diesel to consume some oil when bedding in but not a petrol engine. i would suspect some sort of issue with that level of oil consumption. Even an issue with the oil level detection system perhaps? Does it have a dip stick or electronic detection?

From info gained here, the block absorbs oil when new,why not D2 injector wiring does!!!!!!!
The block is made from powdered cast iron I believe,so it draws oil when new.Mine used a litre or so in the first 10000,hasnt used a drop since.
Make sure that oil you put in matches the factory specs to the tee, these motors are very fussy in wich oil is used.My dealer topped mine up for nothing.

I have only had mine since 50,000km but from that mileage to 235,000km it hasn't used any oil between services.

Adding significant volumes of oil based on the electronic level sensor could be overfilling the engine which can have dire consequences. Get it to your dealer ASAP as they should drain the sump to measure the quantity to determine if the sensor is faulty or there is problematic oil consumption.

Sorry Andy but that is a pile of poo. If that has been posted on here it shows just how bad the state of tech on this forum has become.

Lets say the engine block does absorb some tiny amount of oil. By the time it drives off the ship in OZ and heads to the showroom or pre-delivery inspection, that process would be well and truly over.

Put about 1.5L in and have let it settle for a couple of days. Checked it today and needed to add another 0.5L to bring it up to max. So have added about 2L. Car has done 10,500kms. Electronic sensor, there is no dipstick.

Thanks for the feedback guys, will ring the dealer in the morning for advice.

    Cheers,

    Jase.
