    Should I buy it?

Hi all, well it is time to part with the trusty 97 300tdi, a huge part of my life for so long but with over 400k on the clock and chugging up hills I need to put it to bed.

I have always liked the look of the D3 and my friend has one in his family for sale. It's a 2005 ES TDV6 model with 333,000 on the clock. It has a very tight service history and he is asking 12k with a RWC.

My research suggests this is ok, but I would deeply appreciate your learned opinions.

    Many thanks in advance. John.

Sorry forgot to mention it's bog stock, no bars etc. near new Cooper tyres. I assume the timing would have been required circa 320k and I'll have to ask.

    Cheers.

    Hi John.

Can't advise you on the value of the car you're looking at but have you considered that at your average mileage (roughly 20k pa) you'll have 400k racked up in 3 years time, the same as your current car albeit with a younger car? I'm wondering whether you might be better off with a lower mileage car for longevity. Just a thought.

Timing belt should be due at 336 K, (every 168K or 7 years). I can't remember if you mentioned it but what about transmission service. Should be done regularly despite what Land Rover say.
    Cheers

Yes it's a good thought too thank you Martin. I do approx. 45k every three years so yes it will be getting up there. I most certainly would grab a lower mileage car, although this one is within my price range. Perhaps I should stretch that out a bit. Thanks.

Thanks Mike, yes that's another thing to budget for and one that will be required post-purchase. The transmission service is a good question to put forward - thanks.

You will very likely need lots of money for repairs, which would make the cheap purchase price worth nothing in the long run.

Have a look at the amount of money the previous owner spent on repairs and what he has replaced if you can to get some idea of ongoing ownership costs.

200,000km was the critical time on mine when expensive parts started to need replacing so 400,000km would probably be the second round of even more expensive repairs.
