If you are thinking of buying a used lr4 at one or two years old try the dealership. We offered the same price as a two year old version with 20k on the clock. The dealer was happy to match this for a new vehicle out of stock. It's worth a try. Please note that we are in Europe supply and demand may be different where you are.
D4s are great towing vehicles and much better than any Jeep or ute.
If I was buying I would look for a 1-2 year old 'Mum's taxi' and save up to $20k off the new price. I'd buy it through a dealer and buy an extended warranty. And I on principle wouldn't tow a van much heavier than the vehicle.

It doesn't happen that way in AWEstralia,we don't have dealerships competing against one another.The price is the price!!!!!
Are you aware the size of Western Australia???,have a google,compare it to the size of any European country.
Now would you believe there are 3 places in the whole of WA where you can buy a new Land Rover.There are 2 dealerships in the capital city,Perth,owned by the same company.Other than that there is a dealer on the south coast at Albany,470km away.Thats it!!!!

I'm very happy with my Defender at present, but I suppose in the future I might one day decide I must have an auto and leather - anything is possible. If my Defender continues to rise in value I might even be able to afford a D4 one day.:)

Your dealerships will be getting the LR4 at an end of line discount from the UK and filling their boots with the extra margin by not passing that on to you the customer. Sounds like Australia could do with another dealer! The whole country is made for these vehicles!
If I lived there and I had the cash I would have a serious think about setting up my own dealership.

They decide who can be a Dealer in Australia.
They also decide the specifications we get - often very different to many other countries.
Demand dictates prices, and demand here outstrips supply so prices remain elevated..
Regarding price on the new vehicle. I see that Land Rover Australia are not importing the base S model and are advising a $12k increase in price. From my experience, Land Rover dealers heavily discourage people configuring their own cars and try to push you into a car they have in stock or on the water. In Melbourne there is nearly zero cars with 5 seats and cloth, and most with a few other options thus adding $10k to the price. So I wouldn't be surprised that the new increase in price will mean a base SE is very similar to an optioned TD that many people currently buy. Though that would mean a base 2l diesel. I don't think that will be very exiting.
