My son has just bought a 130k km 2008 D3 SE. When I test drove the vehicle, we noticed a sound from the rear which sounded like a stone rubbing on a brake disk. Fortunately, we insisted that an independent LR shop had a look at the vehicle on our behalf. Turns out that the back diff was making the noise. The necessary price adjustments were made & my son bought the vehicle. When he had it repaired, I inquired as to why this had happened to a vehicle which had not towed or even been off road.
The long & the short of this is that these vehicles are kind to the drive train due to the lower power engine but the long service intervals cause failures like the diff. At the time the diff was done, a steel pan was fitted to the gearbox. Other than the worn control arm bushes, this car is immaculate & represented a huge saving over comparable diesel models.
Hop this helps.
