    Fitting a bigger auxiliary battery

    Gday All,

Has anybody fitted a bigger A/hr auxiliary battery in the space under the bonnet on a D3.?

I have the optima yellow top which I think is 55a/hr but would like to get a bit bigger .

Be keen to hear if anyone has fitted something like 70 or more and if so what brand and type of battery.

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

I have one 55AH fitted in front of the main battery & I wondered if another would fit in the box on the driver's side if I moved the wiring. We have just fitted one to my son's petrol V6 D3 in this location. Maybe Traxide have a kit. That would make 110AH plus whatever is drawn from the cranking battery.

Hi Ean, while there are a number of larger batteries that will fit and clear the bonnet, but with these bigger batteries, you can not put the battery compartment cover back on.

Thanks Tim, I have removed all the covers anyway , cant see any problems if all you can see is engine and battery covers.

Do you by chance have any that you would recommend ?

I fitted the same battery in the D4's cleared 2nd battery box but then didn't leave it there without the cover because of the risk of excessive heat on an AGM battery. It ended-up on its side in a tray in the centre of the 3rd row seats foot-well, partly under the 2nd row centre seat. It's been there 7 years after having done a 2 year stint on its side under a D2.

Hi again Ean, I do not know specific battery brands, but Redback did have large batteries in his.

If you don't mind leaving the cover off, you only need to work out how to secure the battery.

If you already have the genuine Land Rover bracket ( LR Part N# YJF 500100 ) all you need is some threaded M6 rod and a couple of locknuts.

Just a suggestion, try looking for a European type battery because they have recessed battery terminals, which should allow you to get a slightly high Ah battery.

    Hi Ean,
I run two yellow tops one in battery box and one in front of main battery. The one in front of main battery has failed at four years each time because it sits in the heat. The other has been fine. Main battery has also lasted four years both times.
