Pipe Cleaning the Land Rover Roadside Assistance service

Had cause to test Land Rover's 24hour Roadside Assistance service on the weekend.

Went from Canberra to Young for the annual Cherry Festival on Saturday. We arrived only to find a major fuel leak, coming from the pipe connecting the original and Outback Accessories tanks. Nothing I could do as the source of the leak wasn't obvious, so ran to the nearby servo to get a bucket to stop the diesel running into the drain. I hadn't taken out NRMA Premium yet for the upcoming remote trips, and so thought I'd be stuck between Land Rover and Opposite Lock (LRT installer) blaming each other and doing nothing.

I ended up being delighted with them both. Within 30 minutes of making the call to LR, the local NRMA patrolman had me up on a hoist at the local Holden service centre, and declared he couldn't fix it either, and the nearest Land Rover service centre was 175kms away back in Canberra. LR paid for a towie to collect it, hold it in their yard and take back to Lennocks in Canberra on Monday. Paid for the Young taxi service to Cootamundra where our accommodation had been arranged, and then for a Coota taxi to home in Canberra on Sunday morning, and then delivered a replacement hirecar to home that afternoon.

When Lennocks looked at it on Monday, they confirmed to problem was Opposite Lock's. Withing in an hour of calling OL, they had it on a towie across town. Had it fixed same day, and even filled the tanks.

Turns out the fuel pipe had rubbed on the driveshaft above and worn through where we couldn't see. OL replaced and adjusted the brackets so the pipe can't even be forced to touch. You can make out in the attached picture the tank above, the exhaust below and the connecting fuel pipe in the middle, with the driveshaft closely behind that.

Even though it wasn't LR's fault, they paid for us and the car back to Canberra, and a loaner. OL paid for their own towie and a full tank and an apology.

Best outcome I could have possibly expected. At worst, I might have had a burnt out vehicle and both LR and OL running for cover...

I cannot believe that an installer would install a fuel pipe where it would rub against a driveshaft. I know one company that I would not go back to...

Although the original problem shouldn't have happened in the first place, it's great to hear a positive dealer/supplier story. I know diesel's difficult to ignite but as you say, the outcome could have been terrible and you being caught in a "not my problem" situation.

    Excellent service...

I would suggest some heat wrap or a shield where that hose is near the exhaust or it will degrade quickly..
