Petrol vs Diesel

I prefer the diesel, but if offered the choice of a 100k petrol or a 250k diesel it would be no contest I would take the petrol. If you are buying an older or higher km Diesel make sure that either it has had the timing chain done or you adjust the price by about $2-3k to account for it, and the getbit done straight away.

The handbrake can be problematic, but it doesn't fail in the sense that you roll down the driveway, it fails in the sense that it will lock you at the top,of the driveway:D. It does require regular maintenance if you use it in muddy or dusty conditions.

Unless doing a lot of towing heavy weights or REALLY remote touring (so desert say but not just the OTT cape York) I would get a petrol V6 over the deisel any day of the week. Cheers

Have just been reading this thread, and appreciate your thoughts as I'm looking to upgrade my D2 TD5 sometime int he next 12 months. Local reliable Lady mechanic said stay clear of the V6 petrols. However, I'm reading some issues with the diesels here that could be expensive. Would like a V8 petrol, but don't seem to be many of those around. Are they rare, or do people hang on to them?

I currently tow a 2T caravan adequately with my TD5, on occasions. Several times a year, maybe one big trip. Anyone towed with both the TD5 and the V6 petrol. How do the two compare? On paper at least, the petrol V6 is better than the TD5. I'm not too worried about fuel use.

The Ford Explorer which the petrol V6 was also used in had the nickname Ford Exploder so it might be worthwhile searching to see how reliable the engines are in those.

I thought the exploder bit was in reference to the tyres after the firestone saga

I was looking at buying an Explorer some time ago and did some research.

The autos all seem to go at about 100,000 miles. Sound familiar?

The engine is good if treated well with regular oil changes. the problem is that there are AFAIR 5 chains with 2 at the back and 3 at the front, the extra at the front being the drive chain from the original camshaft /jackshaft. This requires a jig to set up and really engine out.

The engines are really cheap in the USA with a Ford dealer advertising at USD 2500 some time ago for a new long engine. They are old now so maybe not so available.

The problems I heard of in Oz were mainly radiator falling off mountings on rough roads and other small stuff.

It was and only related to the older uglier Exploder and i dont think it was a problem here only in the US.
Also the V6 is the ford US motor and not related at all to the pommy/ EU V6.
