I prefer the diesel, but if offered the choice of a 100k petrol or a 250k diesel it would be no contest I would take the petrol. If you are buying an older or higher km Diesel make sure that either it has had the timing chain done or you adjust the price by about $2-3k to account for it, and the getbit done straight away.
The handbrake can be problematic, but it doesn't fail in the sense that you roll down the driveway, it fails in the sense that it will lock you at the top,of the driveway:D. It does require regular maintenance if you use it in muddy or dusty conditions.
