REALLY ! Ford WILL be surprised.Quote:
Also the V6 is the ford US motor and not related at all to the pommy/ EU V6.
Just Google Essex V6 Explorer and have a look at the results.
Although I notice Wikipedia is now begging for money.

So is the Essex V6 the same as the Cologne V6 from the states?
More to the point,is the V6 in the Disco 3 alloy or cast iron?
On a side note, I see very few V8 Disco 3s for sale. Were they not common?
The Cologne V6 ?Essex V6 were similar if not identical engines of AFAIR 3l for the Essex and 2.8 for the Cologne originally, then the Cologne became 3.1 for RS Capris.
The 4.0 L V6 used in the Disco and Explorer is a development of one of them, so much so that it still retains the original camshaft "stick" as a jackshaft to run the overhead cams, which is unusual .
AFAIK it has an iron block , still the block from way long ago. Similar to the Falcon, in which even in its latest edition was still the original block from 1960? or so.
I wouldn't obsess about this as the engine is AFAIK the longest running and biggest volume in the World.
The engine may have been produced in the USA but the design is originally European.
The only caveat is that replacing the timing chains is a long expensive process requiring a complex jig and removal of the engine from the car or I presume body off in a Disco. So buy either a car with evidence of frequent oil changes or very low mileage , and frequent oil changes. Did I say frequent oil changes?

Thanks, that's good advice. I feel a bit better about purchasing a V6 petrol now for my purposes. Hopefully happening sometime in the next 12 months while the TD5 slowly gives up the ghost.
Thanks to everyone in this thread, the enthusiasm here is infectious. So I'm now the proud owner of a (petrol) Discovery 3. Absolutely stoked! I'm sure I'll see you around on other threads.
Nice job mate. Cheers
Good question fineline, exactly the same situation I am in.
