Are you guys worried about exceeding the 75KG weight? Your rack itself probably weighs about 30kg, RTT is just over 50, awning another 10 or so. The second spare, I'm guessing, is about another 25.

That's almost double the recommended limit.

The reason I ask is because I'm in the same boat right now. I want to tour with an RTT and a Bundutec Awning and both of these together weigh 80 kg. I was originally planning to use a large tray to hold all that plus a spare, however I realised that if I have any chance of not exceeding the weight limit by a huge margin, I must forget about the spare and use 3 bars instead of a tray.

That's the only workable solution I've come up with so far.

I'd halve nearly every weight estimate you've listed there. Re calculate and you're only just over the limit. The lightweight rtts weight 36kgs. Spare tyre is more like 15kg max my awning is about 7kg.

There is definitely heavier options. Rooftop tents can weight upto 80kg alone. If you buy the heaviest one on the market. ..

The gentlemen in the discussion mentioned Gordigear RTT which, depending on model, is between 49 and 63 kg.

Sure, a tyre might be 15 kg, but what we're talking about is wheel + tyre combo = I'm pretty sure it'd be heavier than 15.

You weren't far off actually. Just weighed one and it's 23.7kgs to be exact.

If i were you I'd look into a lightweight rtt instead. SpaceCube was one. There's a few others too.

The JetTent we are taking only weighs 20kg so much lighter again.

Actually come to think of it I'm just over the limit at 80kgs. 23.7kg for tyre, 20kg for JetTent and 7-10kg for awning..30kg for rack equals 80kgs exactly.

    Steven,
Your spot on the money and thanks for having made me look more closely at my arrangements. Even with thought, consideration and reading many articles and posts on the subject; over time it's amazing what you can turn a blind eye to! By making analogies of other vehicles and even Land Rover themselves (,take a look at what's on a LR Expedition vehicle) I brushed aside the weight of the rack itself and with ideas and set up plans changing often, thought it wasn't over by much.

    Rack=35kgs, RTT=63kgs, Spare=25kgs, Awning=17kgs.

So, yes in my case at 140kgs, it would have been almost twice the capacity with the RTT fitted. The RTT will be on the car for a couple of initial short local trips only. It is intended to be used with the trailer when I finish off the last few bits. The spare won't fit with the RTT... blessing in disguise I suppose, but with the RTT on that still leaves me over. Am I worried...maybe a little, but not from a safety point of view, more a legal and handling point of view.

I'll more than likely end up with the Spare, Awning, Maxtrax, possibly Hi-lift jack, shovel, table and a few lights. I'll still be slightly over, but much, much closer to the mark.
    .
    Cheers, Mungus.

Your awning is 17kgs Mungus???:O Is it one of those 270degree ones or something?

I have no choice but to put the gas bottle on mine too so will be closer to 90kgs fully loaded.

Just a thought guys but is the 80kg limit strict. There may be an inbuilt safety margin. For example, a wheelchair representative we were speaking to said that although a wheelchair may say a weight limit of say 100kg they are made to cater for about twice that weight and the 100kg is if you use it every day, all day and it would last say 5 years. That is, if you weigh say 150kg the wheelchair would easily cope. What I'm suggesting is that the 80kg may be conservative. I've got no idea whether that is the case. Does anyone know for sure?

Scratch that last post, mine weighs the same apparently:O Add another 10kg... Damn it adds up quick.

As mentioned safety factors, adding 300 kg to the cabin, bull bars, winches, lr tanks, and cargo would surely help counteract 100kg on a roof...

I agree, 75kg limit is probably a huge underestimation.

I'm sure that the roof and the mounts can cope with a lot more weight. However, I do wonder how forgiving the insurance company and the cops will be if I have a crash. Worst case scenario, for example - crash with a fatality where I'm at fault. Last thing I want is to have no cover and no legal ground to stand on in an event like that.

But then I look at vehicles like the DHL expedition Discoveries and wonder - surely someone at DHL would have checked that? Large corporate companies tend to be extremely anal about staying within legal frameworks. I can't imagine that someone at DHL just said "she'll be right". If a branded yellow DHL vehicle was involved in a severe crash and discovered not to be compliant it would be all over the news. Heads at DHL and Land Rover would roll.

Which is why I'm still wrestling with this question - maybe they know something that we don't?
