    Pioneer platform fitting - WARNING

Hi all, fitted up the Rhino pioneer platform (1928 long) today to factory long rails. Standard fit is to use the rectangular nut plates with the 6mm threaded hole. These nut plates are actually a bit narrow and it is possible for them to be located against one inner edge of the roof rail slot and have virtually no purchase on the other lip of the rail. So, if you have one of these get a small mirror and torch, look down the longitudinal roof rail and sight the location of the nut plate in relation to the two lips that it should be in contact with, ensure there is a full width of the lip on the factory rail in contact with the nut plate, if not, loosen and re position.

Have no idea what other variants of Rhino racks and platforms use this system, but I think it is worth the 5 minutes to check.

Have a great Christmas and New Year, be careful out there.

    Peter.
I bought a set of Rhino roof rails.
There were spare nuts in there with a notice saying these MUST be used with the cross bars and racks, not the ones supplied with those items.

Yes, you have to be careful to make sure they grip properly and don't rotate and come loose.

Thanks Andrew there were 3 different types of retaining systems included in the packaging, the rectangular nut plates I have used also a large brass hexagonal nut and an extruded aluminum top hat with a barrel that fits inside. The instructions were to use the rectangular nut plate.

IIRC the trick is that they have to be installed with the longer edge across rather than along the channel. They are quite a snug fit then and have good purchase on the lip of the factory rails.

    Hi Peter

It sounds like you haven't used the correct parts or done them correctly. I will see if I can get a photo of mine.

    Cheers

problem that was not is solved

    Oh dear.............

    How unbelievably embarrassing: bangin:

I did have the plates orientated the wrong way, so what I have learned is that there are two different width cut outs in the top of the longitudinal rail. If you pick the wrong one, which is what I did, and you don't look more closely, which is also what I didn't do, you get it wrong.

    Thanks everyone...............Peter

You're not on your own Peter. I normally leave my LR roof bars off. The first time I put them on I was cursing because they wouldn't move in the tracks properly. Then I noticed that they have to be installed with the bar in a particular way. There is a front and rear to them.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

    Martin
