    P017 Brake Booster recall fix denied

    Hi all,

    3 weeks ago the brakes "failed" on my 06 diesel D3, nearly sending me through a red light at a busy intersection with my kids in the car!

    Local dealer confirmed the P017 recall was done on the vehicle in 2011 and that it does again have a brake booster full of oil, which is directly related to that recall.

    I applied to have it fixed a second time under the recall.

    I'll spare you all the hoops I've had to jump through since then, but finally just got the call from local dealer saying LR have refused to pay for the fix.

    Their reasoning is that since the first fix in 2011, the car has done over 200 000km and has been serviced outside of dealerships. I've asked to get that in writing too.

    Is that fair enough or is that wrong/illegal of them to refuse on those grounds?

    I've read that because it's a critical safety recall, km's, time and locations of service are irrelevant.

    Also, I've read of many people having it fixed a second time under recall, but not sure if that's because their cars didn't have as many km's etc as mine since the first fix.

    I've now been told I have 3 business days to remove the vehicle from the dealership if I don't want to go ahead and pay for them to fix it.

    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Is the brake booster a serviceable item?? Doubt it therefore service history wouldn't come into it.

    I'm sure its been posted all you need to do is empty the oil out of the booster and it will be ok.Suck it out.
    Some sort of catch can on the vac line will solve the problem.
    Assuming JRA worn help out.

    Oil in break booster LRD3 TDv6

    Hi all,
    I know this post is now very late. I have a 2007 discovery 3 tdv6. Recall had been done on ours before we bought it but we still had issue come up again.

    Sucked oil out of booster (about 500ml) did not fix problem. You need a syringe or pump and plastic tube inserted into the vacuum line input. (That will come out with a pair of vice grips and some strength) I removed booster and installed new TRW booster and did not disconnect MC as there was no sign of oil in MC. Unbolted and freed up lines. You can wiggle booster out with it all connected so you don’t have to bleed lines. Just be careful moving MC and ABS module while connected.

    New booster sorted the problem for me. First drive I nearly went thru the windscreen it works so well now😂. Anyway hope this helps. Happy to provide step by step if anyone is struggling with this.

    What makes them fail and what is the LR recall fix supposed to do? Is it random that some fail?

    I think originaly the vacuum pipe didn't have one-way/check valves and would allow oil to be sucked through, in the new ones the check valves can still fail, which is what happened to mine.

    I also needed to replace the booster and check valve in my 2006 RRS, with brake failure after the P017 recall had been done under recall by the dealer
    The oil had destroyed the diaphram as seen in the pic.
