For regular driving theres not much to gain from going to a higher viscosity than a 40 grade oil IMHO - you normally wouldnt be putting much of a heat load into the oil to warrent bumping upto a 50 grade oil. The 5W part is the winter rating of a multigrade oil and has no bearing on the 40 grade at operating temp.

My D3 has 245,000 on it now and I wont consider that high milage until another 100,000 (and all going well I'll be the one to put them on it
