I have to admit, I wonder if rather than making an emergency release, whether simply servicing the unit is an easier long term resolution. (Before it fails)
There is one person who's had a go at actuator "servicing", see here > Broken d4/3 Tailgate Actuator (upper) wanted
However, the more common problem is the breaking of the control cable linkage as per harry's experience & is unrelated to the actuator.
Installing a manual release with full access to an operating and open tailgate is relatively straightforward and means that actuator replacement or cable repair is low stress when/if it happens > Manual tailgate release D3
