Broken d4/3 Tailgate Actuator (upper) wanted

I have an idea on how to fix these rather than replace them so if someone is willing to donate a dead one I will pay the postage and share the method and results on the forum.

I will simply pm my address to you and you can send it to me COD so I pay the postage.

The fix involves drilling a small hole to clean the brushes and commutator.

    Cheers Ken

As well as my EAS emergency air kit, installing a manual override on the tailgate release is another project I want to get done. I've read the post on the failure of this bit of kit and it would be a real PITA if it went with my fridge slide/drawer rack installed. I actually thought it had finally happened when I was installing my reversing camera the other day. Turned out I hadn't reconnected the electrical connector between the switch and actuator. Luckily the panel on the tailgate was still off and I could crawl in to the back and reconnect it from the inside! Try the guys at Triumph Rover Spares in SA, they might have a knackerd one. Will be interested to see what you come up with.

Prior to throwing away my bits I have taken some photos to show what to try to do to fix a sluggish actuator.

The hole is drilled in the back of the case, the side up against the steel mounting plate, there are two probe holes there. Drill directly between them to a depth of 8 mm, 9.5 mm would be too far and probably hit the commutator.

The hole should be just big enough to fit a extension tube through that comes with your contact cleaner, but no bigger than 2.25 mm.

Give it a spray with contact cleaner and see if it works, it may take a few cycles to get working as new, that certainly the case when I cleaned up the brushes in my passenger side door actuator. A spray of wd40 afterwards may help preserve the life of the bush at the back of the motor but maybe I'm over thinking it.

If anyone gives this a try please let me know how it goes, with some very careful measuring it could almost be done through the tailgate with ever decreasing hole sizes.

So after 6 years I am here again to revisit this.

My Actuator has again failed, so that equals 5 to 6 years life with my usage, I do open and close my tailgate more than any other door on the car.

I drilled the hole where shown in the photo using a pin vice and about a 2 mm drill bit. The depth that you drill through is only about 6mm, I had put some shrink tube on the drill bit as depth gauge, it's all plastic so this is a quick job. I also drilled a hole on the opposite side to help flush things out.

Using a syringe I washed it out with 100ml of alcohol and then blew it out with compressed air, this helped but not enough to open the door. I then washed 200ml of distilled water through it and triggered it several times with water inside it, that's when it really started to work. After blowing it out again and purging it with alcohol again and drying I reassembled and refitted... Early days but so far so good.

There is a hole adjacent to the connector this is a vent hole and useful for blowing air into.

I have ordered a new actuator but with postal delays being ridiculous at the moment I thought it was worth trying a temporary fix.
