Fuel efficiency with a 2.7L D4 - is this the norm?

On a run from Sydney to Bryon bay the best I could manage was an average of 9.8L/100km in my D4. This is almost entirely a freeway and although I couldn't find it when searching for it a moment ago I was pretty sure I read other people getting better figures than this?

The car had two adults, a good (but not excessive) amount of camping gear and a surfboard on the roof. No towing.

    Is this a fair usage?
if not, what are the key things I should do/check/replace to try and improve that figure?

I reckon that would be about right, or the same as mine, anyway. We get slightly better, but we don't have a surfboard on top.

If I add a roofrack and take off my H/T tyres and put on aggressive tread tyres my consumption goes up 3-4 ltrs / 100ks .

looking at that I would say its fairly standard , some will get better , some worse but its certainly not bad from what I get.

    Cheers Ean

mid to high 10s is about what I get now, used to be high 11s to early 12l/100 before the ECU remap, so compared to us that is very good, mid 14s when towing for us, so that didn't change at all, but we have bullbar, rear bar, loaded drawers, roof platform, pole carrier and awning on ours.
    Cheers Baz.

Using a spreadsheet and litres used shown on the bowser , over 45,000kms my D4 3L averages 12.28/100km over all surfaces. Highway only and it does 11.5. Are you getting your numbers from the dashboard? You'll probably find that they are a bit optimistic to say the least. If you do, try doing a couple of fill ups and record the real numbers and see what the difference is.

This is what I was going to say. 9.8 measured at the bowser on a country run is quite good. If it was measured on the dashboard, on my car i would add 1.4 litres which is 11.2 and that is not so good. BUT said that, the surfboard on the roof is a real factor here. This is especially true with a headwind. 11.2 is possibly quite OK.

Also I have found that when you roll a long at a true 100kph (say, 104 on the speedo) you get at least 1l/100km better than if you go at true 110 (say, 114 on the speedo). I have watched the instant fuel usage on the dashboard improve with every 2kph "notch" down on the cruise control.

When I head down south from Perth, it's usually afternoon, the sou-westerly is in and I'm in a hurry to get down there to a dinner and some chardy that is waiting for me. So I go into the wind at 114-116 on the dashboard. She has a good hard drink. Coming home, slower and with the wind behind economy is much much better.

Mine is at the bowser also, to and from work(semi urban) it's usually mid 11s, best is 11.3/100, this is slightly better than before the re-map.

10.8 was our best, but that was dead flat country over 300odd K day drive(playing tourist) Cobram area over Easter, filled up at the 24hr servo in Cobram for our trip home the next day, we always keep a record to compare over time, lets us workout if there is an potential issue with the car.
    Cheers Baz.

Is that worked out yourself or from the dash readout?

The best I have ever had out of mine is 9.2l/100,empty,driver only,600 K country run, worked out myself.Actually did the same run twice in one week, fuel usage was identicle for both runs.

Generally, loaded, maybe something on roof,10l to 11l/100 is about the go.

Any faster than a 100 km/ hr and it will use more.

Since the power upgrade,I haven't seen any better fuel economy,in fact it may be very slightly worse.

Don't tow at all with the D4.
