Disco wouldn't start and then fault messages.

Yep mine had solid 4 hour long drives between 'episodes' which was enough to have me thinking it was fixed each time only to lose power doing 110 on the freeway again, I'd keep my foot flat to the floor and it would struggle to do 80 so I would have to pull over.

happily this hasn't reappeared for weeks now so I'm confident it's behind me

I had a battery I presume lose a cell when in Kakadu in my RRC.

I noticed the voltage gauge would drop to 10.something intermittently when on dirt roads, so presume it was a crack in the internal connections of the battery which opened up when hitting bumps.

Though I never conclusively found out , the problem was fixed with a new battery, and I suggest that you do this ASAP, as it is relatively cheaper than endless diagnosis that will cost more within a short time.

Certainly a replacement - especially if over 3-5 years old - is a worthy thing.

You'll go from functional to stranded on the side of the road at anytime!

Inconvenience is far more expensive - as are potential computer problems - low power = higher current draw and heat.. not good for systems!

Would paralelling with a second battery or emergency jump kit battery cure this?

No. It will pull the good battery down.

Being linked eg Traxide, will help extend battery life in good condition but not once a Fault forms in the main battery..

If you have a dual battery system, you could just swap the 2nd battery into the primary battery hole (and totally disconnect the faulty battery). This would get you home, even if the fridge and beer got warm.....

So the theory is, treat the battery like a preventative maintenance item in a similar way to tyres and suspension components; replace with new in the lead up to a remote trip because it has internal components that wear or fatigue and fail with time and/or abuse from rough roads?

Haven't got one of those handy second batteries :( However the vehicle is now in Cairns at the LR Dealer and after a bit of a drama to try and get the vehicle off the tray truck (the Discovery wouldn't start, so couldn't put it into neutral or disengage the park brake) the initial diagnosis was - Low voltage!

Fair comment Scott - but the vehicle is just 2 years old, however in that time I have travelled over 80,000 kms!
