						After 2,000 kms of rough roads towing a 3 tonne caravan up to the tip of Cape York and part way back down, the Discovery decided to stop working
This morning as we were about to leave our camp at the Moreton Telegraph Station there was absolutely no response when I pressed the start button. Thought that the battery was flat and connected some jumper leads and after about 3 minutes it did start, but just about every fault that can be shown on the display - did show! Transmission, ABS, Emergency brakes, Emmission/Engine etc. However I then could not change gear from Park. After a few more minutes it suddenly let me change gear, but then the Park Brake fault light started to flash and it was very sluggish to drive. A few more minutes and by turning the engine off and then on again all of the faults cleared, except for the emission/engine fault.
We then started to drive normally for a while, but after hitting a few corrugations - it all came back again! Faults flashing, suspension height lowered (for our safety) and then the worst was that we lost power for a while. While in Drive the engine just revved and I had to stop and put it in reverse and then in Drive to get going again.
The car is booked to be checked out in Cairns tomorrow, but I am hoping that it is just something that has come loose, or maybe it is just the battery after all!
Has anyone had any similar experiences?

						No - just use a battery box to run the car fridge. Charge the battery box from the rear 12v socket.

						Sounds as though either the battery has an internal break or there is an intermittent short circuit to earth somewhere on a major cable such as the starter/alternator cable.

						There were some pretty hard bangs a few times when we hit unexpected holes along the track - could have cracked a cell plate?
The intermittent short circuit theory also makes sense as the faults showed up after hitting some corrugations - but not every time.
Old, damaged or even a loose terminal.

						SupporterThis happened to me only a few weeks ago on Fraser Island when my battery died completely. I got a stack of fault codes and lost power about half a dozen times on the drive back to Sydney. Each time I turned the car off and back on again, the power would restore and I could continue my drive.
Strangely this stopped happening a few hours north of Sydney and hasn't happened again since my return which was about a month now.
Everyone said the battery is dying dying but now all is ok. I suspect that a dead battery must play havoc on the computers for a while until it normalises but glad I didn't replace it.
Give it a bit more time and see if it corrects itself

						Interesting that it corrected itself. We thought it had as well at one stage but then after hitting some rough sections it went haywire again.
