The things we do for our fellow members. I lost 3 fingers to frostbite but I found that on my MY13 D4 simply having the bonnet popped was enough to show the oil level. Did not need to press the cruise control and doing so without the bonnet open produced no result. Where can I send my doctor's bill for the frostbite?

I think I may be missing something here (apart from a brain that is) but doesn't waiting a few minutes allow the oil to drain down and give an accurate reading? I'm never in a big rush these days and I check it when the Cooks in the shops wasting money again so a 10 min. wait while watching the loonies parking is nothing.
But I suppose as our local rag keeps telling us, our lives are so busy these days we haven't got time to waste which explains a lot of motoring behaviour actually.

In my D4 ................... I check the instantaneous oil level by pulling out the dipstick.

You can check the oil level first up while cold, ignition on, before you start the vehicle.
