    Replacing Cig Socket

I've bought a dual port USB socket Universal 5V 4.2A Waterproof Dual USB Socket Car Power Charger Adapter For Phone to replace the existing Cig lighter next to the gear knob in my MY16 D4. My problem is that the workshop manual I have, (bought it from this forum) only goes up to 2014 and there seems to be some changes in the trim. Before I go grabbing, pulling and prying things apart, I'm wondering if anyone can share an up to date diagram of the console to make taking it apart and putting it back together a less frightening job?

    Hi Rod,
I can't help you with a more up to date manual but I have taken that part of the console apart many times (when I was retrofitting a reversing camera)

    What has changed ?

David, I don't know what's changed as it's my first time taking the console off it was that the pictures in the manual were slightly different to what's on the car and therefore clips etc maybe in differnt positions

Ah, ok, understand. Maybe a photo of your console might help. In my MY14, no doubt as per the procedure in the manual you have, the procedure is:

    remove cup holder (pull up)
undo 2 screws under cup holder - 1st pic below is where they screw in.
pull console up firmly at the back end until it pops up (it does take a fairly decent pull)
pull console towards the back of the vehicle slightly and then lift up and out. There is some play in the connector cable for the loom so you can flip it onto the passenger seat.

    Not sure if that helps...

Rod I'd be doing a test to make sure that works on whatever you plan on charging first. I've tried used 2.1amp usb sockets to charge my Samsung tablet and Mrs. Iphone 7 and it doesn't work. Will only charge my Galaxy Note 4. Just a problem we ran into on our recent trip we had 3 sockets with only 1 useable for 3 devices. Make sure it's a couple of hours testing too as the Samsung charged for 20mins or so then x on battery symbol. Don't trust the eBay description..
Would be a shame to risk pulling apart the console for no reason.

    Good luck, hopefully it works.

For this type of reason is why I went with these low profile plug-in ones from Office Works.
I actually think they look really good and obviously removable as required.

I realise that's off topic but I seem to recall David (I think) having rattle/squeak noises after console removal so I have steered away from doing it unless 100% required.

Yes, that was me. The creaking is fixed now but the solution is to take even more of the car apart as the 'correct' sequence to put these console / dash parts back together is to fit the lower console (the bit you're contemplating removing) first, then both the upper console pieces. It can be a bit unnerving and untidy...

The options proposed above are definitely worth considering. I use this one (Anker 24W 4.8A Dual USB Car Charger PowerDrive 2 for iPhone 6s Samsung Galaxy | eBay) which IIRC was recommended by Tombie. It isn't low profile but outputs 2A+ from both ports...

Now that I think about it a bit more too, the way that accessory socket is mounted in that lower console, it would be a bit of a struggle, probably involving cutting plastic, to replace it. I'll see if I can find a photo of that area.

Thanks for the replies guys the photos on the console removal are great.
I too have used the dual port adaptors but they tend to keep falling apart on me so I wanted something more reliable. I know about the charging, or in most cases, non charging of big tablets. I have 2 adaptors rated at 2.1A that refused to charge my Galaxy Tab2 9" so I bought a Samsung car charger, rated at 2.1A and it worked. Go figure.
