    D4 Replacement Compressor

Hi all.... searched high and low across the forum and no one thread seems to talk about where to get a replacement compressor from, and if it's worth doing the repack of the dryer unit over replacing the compressor.

Whats a new OEM one worth?

Is it worth fitting a second hand one from a wrecked car?

AMK or Hitachi, and comparative cost?

Best value replacement available in Australia?

    TIA

Seems Britpart or LRDirect may be favoured sources and AMK preferred over Hitachi

Whether rebuilding or replacing your compressor you will first have to remove the old one. That is probably the hardest part of the job. Once out, then rebuilding the Hitachi compressor using a kit from XR8 is very straight forward. Replacing the drying beads - dead simple. Removing and replacing the piston seals and o rings a bit more involved but still only basic skills and equipment needed.

The supplied kit comes with all you need including special tools to assist removal of the piston and replacement of the seals.

Just rebuilt mine about 2 weeks ago. About a 4 ~ 5 hour job.

X8R Land Rover Discovery Air Suspension Repair.

Note there is utube video about showing the removal steps of the Hitachi compressor. They cut the air lines to the compressor with a hack saw. You definitely do not need to do that. The air lines simply unplug from the compressor and are re-plugged back in later.

Well, after almost 8 years my original Hitachi compressor for my D4 MY10 is showing the signs (occasional Suspension Errors) and was diagnosed today by the mechanic to be in need of replacement.

When ordered from LR it would be $1700 for the original part. Thanks to some research on this forum and a quick Google I knew I could get it delivered for close to $AUD700 from various UK suppliers, and that I would need a full kit.

Some further research and a quick Google for a 10% discount code I have just ordered it for $AUD607 delivered from Bearmach, who checked my VIN for me (via webchat) and confirmed the one I needed was LR045251R.

There are good pictures and instructions on disco3.uk, a YouTube Video etc, and seem to line up with the mechanic's estimate of 3 hours (to be safe).

Now I am considering using some of my savings towards an IID Tool and updating software for the new compressor myself. Has anyone here successfully done this with an IID Tool? Is it easy to do?

I installed the bearmach Amk and updated the software myself using a nanocom eco and it was a very straight forward process.

Alternatively I know Ayres automotive can update the software if you happen to be on the north side of Sydney

Great news - it has arrived in Sydney at the mechanic's so I will call tomorrow and see what the condition is.

Well, Island 4x4 was the first to respond with stock (someone else said their supplier could not supply until mid February), and they had a good enough price for approx $675 delivered. I checked out the demo mode in the app, and have found the setting, so it looks easy enough to do, so will DIY. Really hoping that I can get this before the long weekend kicks in, but from what I have read the compressor can be replaced and will work even without the software update and no damage is being done, right? And once the IID arrives I can clear all errors that were raise in the interim all by myself

Last week when I first had the problem diagnosed they had told me that another customer has brought their own as well, but arrived in several parts as opposed to a single bolt in unit. This meant they needed to spend additional labour to get it all together.

As for the version I ordered from Bearmach, all was fitted easily yesterday by Graeme Cooper Automotive with no problems and because my IID Tool hadn't arrived yet they also did the software update. All done for 3 hrs labour. I looked underneath and can see the new black plastic covers etc. Definitely sounds a little different.

Just curious - is there a simple way to know if you have an AMK or Hitachi?
Mine was replaced in 2012 by the original owner/dealer, and the part number shown is ROLR023964 at $871.71 + gst.
I've googled the part number, but without success
