Locked and loaded for the Gibb...and HEAVY

Just for laughs, took the D4 over a weighbridge yesterday, in preparation for Saturday's departure for Cape Leveque, the Gibb and other remote places.

Loaded with MOST of our gear, 180 litres of fuel, spare wheel carrier, spare battery, a couple of rod tubes and max trax on the roof, but minus the bride and a couple of clothes bags, she came in at 3,080KG. With the camper trailer putting 190KG on the tow hitch, I've calculated I've got precisely 157KG left before I hit maximum allowable GVM.

I might have to strap the bride to the boat loader on the camper trailer.

Just as well you haven't put a Kaymar Rear Bar and Bullbar on the car like mine!

Maybe you need to put more stuff in the trailer or carry less stuff. We can fit Michelle in if you like!!

See you in Broome. I'm not going to weigh mine again.

The thought did occur to me:-) Fortunately SWMBO doesn't have access to this forum.

I've ditched the spare battery - that saves 37KG - and borrowed a new fangled 60A/H lithium battery instead. Only weighs 5KG. And it can be charging off the inverter in the camper while we're travelling.

    Are they 19inch wheels?
If so be careful as you approach dips as some can be pretty rough and don't lower the pressure too much with that much weight and go slowly.

I still remember the bloke at the NSW Range Rover Club who did 11 Coopers between Sydney and Darwin and that was with 18 inchers. LOL. All bruised on the inside by the rim jamming the tyre between it and the rocks .

You certainly won't be the first to take off into the wild yonder in a D4 that's over GVM. I saw one recently top 3,500Kg with the camper on the back, but it certainly didn't have any issues along the way.

Pity it is technically illegal, as the vehicle could run at 4 tonne all day every day and not bat an eyelid.

You'll just have to take the chance or stick a few more things in the trailer (if that's not already overloaded).

I doubt you'll be the only person on the road a few Kg's over, I wouldn't stress it too much.

    Have a great trip!

Yep, and I'm sure I've been a bit overloaded on previous trips up that way. But the older I get, the more risk averse I become. I'm loading the trailer as much as I can, it's way under ATM of 2000kg at the moment, but there's precious little room left in it.

Yeah they're 19s with LT Maxxis tyres. I've only ever blown one tyre on the Gibb, in my RRS with 19s about 6 years ago...hit a dip too fast and a sharp rock did me in. And that was a Cooper too.
