Pull the EPB emergency release cable then don't attempt to use the EPB until the fault is investigated. The cause could be as simple as the EPB shoes are out of adjustment or as bad as needing a new EPB module.
Folks,
as the title states the EPB failed on my D3 this evening coming back home from the shops. Was waiting at an intersection then crunch, grind noise and the car jerked a few times then it was away. Did it once more before I got it home.
Got into the garage and put the park brake on to be met with more crunch noises and a horrible screeching sound then the dash lit up and warning messages about EPB failure etc.
Not sure what is involved to repair it or whether I should risk trying to sneak it over to Bowen Hills to my LR mechanics or not. Its about a 20 min drive.
Appreciate any advice.

If you can drive it, no need to pull the cable. Just stick some masking tape over the switch to remind yourself not to use it.

Worth knowing how to release the brake. Watch the video as it takes a huge effort to pull on the three times I have used it. I can use pliers with a lot of muscle. The video is of a Left hand drive but the position of the cable is the same for ours.
Jeeze did it again - Birdy recovery was one of my specialties while getting wet.To be honest not the happiest outcomes in the past so you're much more welcome.
My wire is a little tricky to get hold of as well and not as large or shiney as the one in the video. I have used long nosed pliers on the last effort. Id guess every 80,000 or so KM I have played with it usually when wet, muddy and long way from home.
Can relate mate, I was on one of the first crash recovery teams for F111 A8-127 at Guyra NSW, 450 kts, inverted and almost vertical when it went in. Not a lot of the aircraft or crew left. I knew the driver and his Nav as they used to come into our section to get TVs & VCRs repaired. Very sad times.
Did not need to use the emergency brake release thank goodness, did some running about Sat morning for an hour, about 15km without issue though this morning driving it to KHOR to get fixed I could disinctly feel the park brake applied as when I lifted my foot to coast it slowed down very quickly, had a bit of a clunk at one stage but got it there without incident.
Wrote them a fault report and timeline (Engineer / Project manager in me)
See what they find.

D3 all fixed, Bob at KHOR got it sorted for me and had it back by 3pm yesterday. Great service.
Had to reset the EPB module and replace shoes and springs on drivers side rear.
Happy happy
